Favor Pizza Joints ...
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:20:08 pm »
Love food.   :lick: :lick:

There isn't any special pizza place where I live, just the normal chains, and a couple locals, which is not even on par with the better of the chain shops.

Any special pizza place where you live?

Uncle Dave's Pizzeria on Kal Lake Rd. It's supposed to be authentic Italian style, but not being an authentic Italian, I wouldn't know.  ;D What I do know is Uncle Dave makes the best pizza in town. If you're ever in Vernon you've gotta try it.

I haven't been there yet, but I've heard that Il Centro in Calgary makes a good pizza. I think some magazine recently proclaimed it best in the city.  Coincidentally, I just got back from dinner with some friends and that restaurant came up in conversation. They said the pizza there is pretty good, but the calamari is truly outstanding.

My wife and I are planning to go on Thursday for lunch - I'll let you know what we think.

On the exotic side their is Pizza-za in Hull that have way-out-there recipes like "la St-Jacques" with clams and "la tropicale" with mangoes. Really amazing flavors.
Pizza-za, remember it well. When we lived in Ottawa and my Wife was counsel for the CRTC we used to go there on Friday's after work.

Edmontonians that love traditional pizza must visit Tony's Pizza in the downtown near 96th Street.  The best!

It's at either King and Columbia or Weber and Columbia.  North...west corner of the intersection.

Had lunch at Il Centro today and was impressed. Owners are an Italian couple (been in Canada for decades) and the pizza is just simple and traditional like we had in Italy. Thin crust, but nice and chewy, and not overloaded with a ridiculous amount of toppings (fans of the Super Extraavaagaanzaa Double Meat Cheese and Sausage Lovers Extra should probably go elsewhere  ;) ).

Calamari was really good, too. Lightly battered rings of squid topped with parsley and a hint of spicy tomato sauce. Very simple, not greasy at all, and you could actually taste the squid. Much, much nicer than the usual mouthful of grease, breadcrumbs and tzatziki (although, the Greek version can be good too).

It's not pizza, but I also have to mention our favourite Calgary lunch spot, Falafel King. The shawarmas there are truly awesome! Everything they prepare is top quality (no processed donair meat  :P) and fresh, fresh, fresh. Maybe my favourite restaurant anywhere. And cheap, too.

Bronte/Burlington

Napoli Pizza

Run by some very nice Asian folks.   ;D

I think "authentic" Italian pizza is terrible.

The Ottawa area seems to have a plethora of good pizza joints off many styles.
Piz-za-za is one of the good ones for sure.
Gabriel's, Harvester house, Colonnade, Papa sam's, Willy's, Joe's ... the list goes on.
They are all good pizza places in Ottawa depending what you want.

Pizza Pizza should not be able to call what they sell pizza. More like "Bread with sauce bread with sauce".
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

In Ottawa, House of Georgie just off Elgin Street is amazing.

In Montreal, the my fave pizza joint used to be Amelio's, in the McGill ghetto.

In St. John's it was Topsail Road Pizzaria.

So far I haven't figured out the best place in Sarajevo.

I don't mind Domino's for when we just want to pick up the phone and have something arrive at our door. Looks like I was an unwitting participant in their grand experiment, though:

We used to have Vito's Cave here in London and Wayne Gresky rated it the best in the world at the time. They actually had a clubhouse upstairs for a lot of the older NhL players as some of them gathered there almost everyday until it closed a few years ago now. ito retired and the new owners gambled the place away.  :)

In Woodbridge, in the one of the plazas around Vaughan Mills mall, there is a pretty good place called Marcello's where we go to for pizza.

Revan Pizza on Portland street in downtown Dartmout is so good that even though we are outside their delivery radius we call ahead and drive down to pick it up. I don't think we've had pizza delivered in years. Run by a Lebanese familiy super nice people and the pizza hazz a great slightly sweet sauce and the dough is always just right.
