Saw my first Venza in the real today at local Toyota dealers. A Black one with grey leather, and the Touring Package (which is virtually everything except Navi). It was stickered at less than $40K. The car looks pretty darn good in real life. It was also sold, as were the 2 others in the back getting prepped. IMO it looks better in the real than in the pix.

So is it much small then a HL?

I drove 1 yesterday. Basic awd V-6. Great car for $32,000. Real quiet & more car like then my 08 highlander. Lower roofline & way more aerodynamic. It reminds me of a lowered stretched lexus rx330. It is a lot more manueverable & peppier then my HL. The window sticker rates awd at 36 hi-way mpg for v6 awd. This might be my next car. I get a new one every year & hL is having it,s 8 month birthday!!!

No, not much. Stats from Toyota.ca website are:

Length: V - 189"; HL - 188.4" (old HL like our '05 is only 184" long).
Width: V - 75"; HL - 75.2".
Height: V - 63.4"; HL - 69.3" (HL sits 6" higher).
Clearance: both 8.1"
Weight: V (V6AWD) - 4045#; HL (SportV6) - 4255# (HL heavier as expected as V is more car-like).
Towing: V - 3500#; HL - 5000# (as expected).

The new HL is a much larger vehicle than our 2005 model and I find the current HL a bit on the big side. The new Venza is lower, lighter and more car-like. I haven't driven either the new HL nor the Venza.

I stopped by my local Toyota dealer for a quick look today (did not test drive though) and the model they had was the same as you mentioned.  I too was VERY impressed.  I liked pretty much everything about it and thought it looked better in person than in pics too.  One thing I really liked was the ease of entry and exit... you just slide in... you're not stepping down into a car or up into an SUV.  The seats were very comfortable and there was a good amount of room all around.  Plus, tons of storage in that center console.  And the panoramic room was a thing of beauty...gives a nice open feel to those in the rear seats.  It's is a feature I've been jealous of that other markets get for other vehicles, but we can now get it here at a great price point.

I have some serious interest in this as my next vehicle, especially now with the very aggressive pricing Toyota released.  I was originally looking at the Forester (front runner) or CRV, but the pricing and feature set of the Venza just screams value.  Plus, it has a very upscale feel to it... feels like a top-level Camry/Accord (or dare I say entry level Lexus) vs the Civic/Impreza feeling of the CRV/Forester.  I still really like the Forester and will have to drive the both when buying time comes, but for the models I'm looking at, the Venza just offers much more for the price and a higher end feel to boot.

People question Toyota on the decision to bring this vehicle, saying it tries to be too much... a sedan, a wagon, a crossover... but I really think they hit the nail on the head by offering something that will cater to many different buyers all at once.  I think it'll be a huge success.

I think if you pulled off the chrome grille and did it in black chrome or body colour it would look better....

I have bought a new car every year for the past 20 years & drive 80,000 km a year for work so i kinda know what to expect for actual milege.
I had a 03 vibe rated at 47 mpg hi-way that could not break 37 even on a 1000 km hi-way drive.
I had 4 Saturn Vues (honda v-6 awd)that got 32-34 mpg hi-way all day every day(26ish in the winter)
I had a 92 gm full size extra cab 2wd with a 350 that got 23 mpg routinely.
mpg was all over the map in relation to ratings.

As I said in the original post....according to Toyota this is listed in their "Car" section.  Its a tossup as to if its a car (ahem..."wagon") or a CUV.  If the MODs decide to move it thats ok.  Either way I think its very interesting frm a marketing/academic point of view that both Toyota Canada and Toyota USA list the Venza in the car category of their website.

Being called a"Truck" is the kiss of death in today's market. GM would be marketing the Yukon XL as a "raised, stretched car" if they thought they could get away with it!  ;D

Truck?? Truck??? Are you kidding me??? Truck????

<apologies to Jim Mora>

If that's a truck then I'm Benicio Del Toro. It's a Camry with a new rear clip and a nose job. Toyo badge engineering at its finest.

And the only reason it's a "Venza" and not a Camry wagon is Americans don't buy wagons.  ::)

As far as the whole Cars vs Trucks/SUV's thread thing is concerned.....there aren't a whole lot of truck based SUV's left. I'm not sure the threads shouldn't be titled "cars/suv's/cuv's" and "Trucks"

Clueless as usual, eh Greg?  It shares more with the Higlander than it does Camry platform-wise.

The floorpan has Highlander in front, beefed up Camry in the middle and a unique to Venza in the rear.  Suspension lifted almost all from Highlander, though shocks/spring rates re-tuned specifically for the Venza.

This is not a "badge engineered" vehicle since the chassis/floor is unique to the Venza and no other Toyota uses it (yet?).  For badge engineering at it's finest, please see GM SUVs  (Acadia, Enclave, Outlook) and Pontiac/Chevy small/midsize cars.

And FWIW, the EPA classifies this vehicle as a light truck (even though we all know it's no truck).

FTFY

It doesn't appear to have as much load floor area as my Outback for instance. Having seen one in person now, it bares an uncanny resemblance to the Ford Edge.

I guess the staff at Canadian Driver are clueless as well then. I quote:

"Designed and built in North America for this market only, the five-seat Venza offers consumers an alternative to an SUV or minivan (or a sedan, for that matter) by combining attributes of each of those vehicles on its Toyota Camry platform."

And this:

"You could, therefore, call the Venza a Camry wagon, if you focus only on the common platform and familiar profile, but I suspect buyers will regard it as a better-looking crossover."

All I know is that it looks like a Camry, sounds like a Camry, and acts like a Camry.
