happy new y... Whaat! My laptop just died!
« on: January 01, 2009, 02:03:10 pm »
Shiit, my little more than a year old( meaning just out of warranty ) MacBook just took a crap on me and packed up its harddrive.

:(

At least I think it's hard drive. Now I lost all the porn collection ;)
All kidding aside, all the calender and contacts are on my iPhone. ... Shiit the calender only stores last 30 days...

I'm so cheezed off this happened on the first day of new year.

I hope everyones new year morning is going better than mine.

Cheers

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

Track done another Mac and a Firewire cable, and see if you can boot the MB into Target Disk Mode.  If you can mount the harddrive, you might be able to pull the data off it.

Sorry to hear, though.  I had a harddrive pack it in after only two years in my old PC, and it's never fun.

Do have another mac but no FireWire cable, and the hdd so won't spin for me anyway.

I've had numerous pC's over the years new and used but actual hardware failure this is a first for me.

I must say this sucks major azz.

Now I gotta think of way to replace it :) maybe it's sign from g.o.d to get new aluminum mac Eh? ;)

Try the old freezer trick.  Take the bad HDD out and mount it in an external enclosure.  Put it in a ziplock bag and leave it in the freezer overnight, and you might get a few more hours of life out of it.  Any failure after that is pretty much final.

Haha.  :D  I really dig the new MacBook.  Very tempted to replace my first-gen BlackBook with one.  Sadly, I just got a miniDV camera with firewire output, and the new MacBook doesn't have Firewire!   >:(  Silly Apple...

Always back up your good porn and test your backups.  So that in case a disaster happens, you're not SOL.  :)

Just replaced the one in my Macbook a few weeks ago. Can you boot into Ubuntu Livecd or something?

don't have Ubuntu CD at the moment.
+1 for the freezer trick. I have seen it work long enough to pull some data off a drive.

hmm, never heard of this...  I might give it a try.  i just need some app data off this, i guess.  i do periodicaly make backups to my other mac, so i won't lose much.

I heard about Master Card extended warranty, so I will give them a call as well.
Apparently, for electronics with 1 year mfg warranty, MC gives you extra 1 year warranty free..  so I will call and enquire about that before i go replace anything on the labtop.

anyhoo, thanks for the sympathies.

Did you get anywhere with MasterCard?

You could always pick up one of these on eBay for $20 or so.  13 years and still running strong. ;D

Hitachi M-120D :)

120 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM, 1.5 GB HDD, and you get to choose on startup whether you want a floppy or CD drive (not hot-swappable).

Runs Win95B or OS2 Warp just fine. Over $3000 when new I bet.

Anyway, replace a HD in a Mac is rather simple and inexpensive, $75 buys a sata 160GB.

^ Boy have laptop drives come down in price (and up in capacity).  I'd go for a nice 320GB 7200 RPM drive, myself.  I've thought about swapping in a larger, faster drive: word is you see a fairly substantial performance boost, with no major impact on noise or battery life.

If you've got coin to blow, an SSD would be a fantastic upgrade, too.  Pricey, though.  :/

Wow. The EXACT same thing happened to my Macbook in May. A couple weeks out of warranty, and the hard drive died, it started ticking and wouldn't boot. I lost all of my data.

I recently just purchased an external hard drive to back up my files.

If it ain't a Stinkpad, don't touch it! Convincing Macs to go P-See? Takes some shakings and doings for sure.

well, I waited couple of days to call master card to Inquire about warranty and I did today.

It turns out my 8 year old mastercard doesn't have any extra benefit at all.

Oh well, no big loss but you guys call your MC company to make sure you have those benefits, eh?

Now I'm off to get new hdd :)
