Tyronno Skyline
« on: December 27, 2008, 10:44:15 pm »
I want to take a photo of the Toronto Skyline that I am going to produce as a print, my question is where from?

1. Looking on Google Maps, Centre Island or Olympic Island look the best vantage points, does anyone know which is best or anywhere better?

2. I'm assuming there is a car ferry service over there, otherwise I have no idea how you would get around, any idea how much it is to take a car across?

3. Also if I am just going to take photos and not go to any of the attractions, can I do that for free or is there some sort of fee I still have to pay?

thanks in advance.
 :)

Centre Island is your best bet. I think the ferry across is around $6/person while for children is free (IIRC).

Here's a really good spot. I'll give you the coordinates - I'm that cool ;D. 43.631707, -79.357078.

Oh and you don't have to pay for 'attractions' on the island cause there's none, unless.. you count the nude beach as one..

Have fun!

Oh and I think you'll have more trouble parking downtown than finding a good spot for your pics. :)

There is a ferry to take you over to Centre Island.   You can take your bicycle with you on the ferry and then cycle around Centre Island.  Or you can just walk.  I believe the ferry terminal is at Queen's Quay.   It has been a while since I made a trip over there.

I don't think there is a car ferry service except to the airport and even then I don't think you can drive anywhere except the airport itself.  On the main part of the islands the only vehicles IIRC are a fire engine, ambulance and a police car

Another spot is Tommy Thompson Spit. Go right to the end where the lighthouse is. Note that you can't drive to the end and will have to walk/bike but access is free. Plus there are a lot of birds through this area so where a hat.  ;D

When you are done, head over to Ed's Ice Cream for some of Toronto best.

Interesting, hadn't seen that.  Yeah but the other islands would be in the way from there wouldn't they?

Actually it looks like the middle ferry to Toronto Island Park (Centre Island) doesn't operate in Winter, so I'd have to get the ferry to the dock near Algonquin Island Park, and walk to the right vantage point, probably somewhere on Centre Island, probably half an hour's walk.

You actually get a clear view. Here are two pics taken from different spots out there.

I was thinking too that it would be nice to see a photo taken from a different perspective than the one offered by the most easily accessible, and thus probably most often used, vantage point.  But from what I've seen of your photos you have an uncanny ability to make a photo different (in a good way) from what anyone else standing next to you would be taking. So carry on...

... but I think Saf is wrong in that your subject line is the first time I've ever seen the name of the city spelled correctly!  I've tried often to capture in print what everyone says when they talk about it, but have never quite gotten it.

When I moved to Tyronno many years ago I arrived at Union Station as an impressionable young thing, I remember being absolutely wowed by the view looking up as I emerged onto the street - and I wonder if the building I especially remember is the one Saf mentions, all reflective gold if I recall correctly.

Hmm, could be an option, I might try driving that first, the ferry trip, walk, photo, walk, ferry back is a whole night's expedition.

Thanks gottarondo  :) I do my best.  And Saf I agree, std skylines can be boring, but I don't think I've ever captured a truly great one, would like to try with Toronto!
