Had four screw piles installed yesterday for my back deck reno.  Hit rock in three of the four piles so had to make adjustments to their original positions.  That sucks because it took me a while to work out the post placements so that the deck posts don't block windows and ingress/egress to the walkout basement entrance.  Took almost 6 hours to install 4 screw piles.   :P

Yeah, I think screw piles are okay for decks, or even sun rooms.

But I would never ever put a residence on them.  No Way.

Do it right, no issues. Cut corners, and man do things pile up in a hurry.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I'm only really surprised by how little they get paid. $1500 flat fee? To hell with that!

This does not surprise me in the least.  I get the feeling it's a similar thing for Escape to the Country (a show I really enjoy just to see the properties).  Sometimes, the people seem a bit wooden, or even trying the keep a straight face, and I wonder if that's the reason.

Yeah, that's just crazy!  ::)  Screwpiles provide no lateral stability.  A combination of diagonal braces, hurricane ties, and the deck boards themselves provides the lateral stability, for my deck anyways.  I would only use concrete posts for new construction.  I'd never have gotten concrete posts in the area that i wanted without some major excavation and a huge mess.

^^ Concrete posts or concrete footings?

I don’t see how there’d be a lateral stability problem with a screw pile vs a concrete footing. They’re both sunk down into the earth. I’m sure it depends on soil composition and stuff, but if properly engineered there should be no problem.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were certain soil conditions where screw piles were actually preferable over a concrete footing/foundation, even for a house.

I can not think any conditions that screw piles would be preferred

^^ I dunno. Somewhere with a really high water table? Or maybe up north where it’s semi-muskeg?

Houses get built on piles all the time. Not sure why screwing it in would be any worse than pounding it in?

Neither one provide any lateral stability.  They footings only provide a stable base to rest on and the post just sit on top.  The only reason the posts are bolted to the bracket is so that they don't get knocked out of position if they get hit, or run into with a mower,
or something.  Neither one provide any lateral (side-to-side) stability.  Below is a picture of one of the new posts on the screwpile and next to the old concrete piling.  There is nothing there to prevent lateral movement for the posts.  When i went to remove the old post from its concrete mount, after i removed the old support beam, i simply pushed it over and ripped out the nails holding it to the mounting bracket.  Same for the new ones mounted on the screw piles.  I had to use lots of temporary bracing until I got the joists and diagonal bracing in place.

No problem setting anything on screw piles AFAIC as long as the lateral bracing is addressed.

As far as applications are concerned, screw piles are far superior for avoiding frost heaving than concrete piles in my experience.  I know a contractor friend of mine installed screw piles for his deck and some fence posts almost 15 years ago and he has never had an instance of heaving since.  The freeze-thaw cycle has gotten a lot worse in the last several years and last year my deck heaved more than ever and was really noticeable.  Last winter the front rim joist of my deck looked to be elevated at least a few inches above the ledger board.

Nothing wrong with screw piles as long as they're built to standard and used appropriately. We've got high voltage equipment held up by screw piles that haven't moved in decades.

People buying cheap screw piles that use weak steel, with no rust protection and bad welds shouldn't be surprised when their 'bargain' fails.

For structural applications, get a damned engineer or civil tech involved.

I'm a big fan of woodworking and I made my first wooden table recently. I found router bits reviews on some website and ordered a few for home use. They are useful in the workshop.

Nice work.   I have a huge piece of salvaged oak that I plan on doing something similar with at some point.   I'm a little hung up on what to use for a base.  Did you buy those legs ready made or were they custom built?

That's awesome. Did you by any chance use the Live edge timber material? I ask because this weekend I'm about to start my office desk project where I build a custom 8 foot desk top using their lumber and legs. Love it!

I love it when a plan comes together.
