DIY or irritated thread...could go either way.  :P

Got a ph call as I was leaving work yesterday: dad, the pipes are leaking.  The kitchen is wet.  Not bad, but there's water coming from somewhere.

Fackdammitfackfackfack...fack.

Now I gotta search out a leak from somewhere where we just finished off fixing a leak...fack fackfackfack...

Get home, and it's this.  Gotta love someone else's handy work - so no comments necessary on the way the stud was cut through, it wasn't me!

And here's the culprit.

Nice little hole in the pipe.  My kid thinks I did it...I think not.  There's no panelling there so I didn't air nail anything...plus, after 2~ months, you're telling me that little nail rusted that much? But hey, he's always right.  :P ::)

Lucky me I had enough spare parts and copper pipe lying around I could fix it without having to go to the store. Lucky for me I had the parts I needed I didn't need to solder anything (I had enough for that too...but I hate doing that in tight spaces).
Before:

After:

I should've re-worked all that when I had the walls apart.

Sorry for the large pics...new phone...  Damn. They's BIG.

Look at ALL the things that are going on in that little area.  TWO drains, two electrical lines (and one outlet), and two water supply lines.

Good God, this is why I never want to buy a house that was built pre-1960's or so.

Oh, also Aluminum wiring... :banghead:

It's actually only one drain - the vertical one is for the washer - it loops around back into the other one which is for the 2 sinks in the bathroom.  You should see the corner where the toilet, tub, and this all connect.  Makes Confusion Corner look like child's play.

Aluminum wiring eh?  That's the brown Canada stuff?  I did not know that.  Fack...we won't even insure houses with aluminum wiring...I won't tell anyone.  :-X

I'm sure I (or anyone who knows better yet) would be shocked at what would be found if the walls were ever opened up.  I know I've probably done some fishy things - like when I replaced the plumbing this winter...I could've connected everything right here instead of going around the tub FFS...it's almost laughable. It's right, but talk about taking the long way around.  And at least it won't freeze anymore.  Hindsight always gets ya!

BTW, I too hate old houses...the movie wasn't a comedy...it was a documentary. A warning to others.

I mean you lucked out...kinda.  I had a co-worker who bought an older house to flip, and it turned out the house was still wired with knob and tube.  It was something like an extra $15 000 that she had to spend to have an electrician come and rewire the entire house.

Kinda why home inspectors are useful, if you can't look at this stuff yourself at least.

If you don't catch that, you have no business flipping houses.

Yeah, even I caught that with the 1st house we bought in Ottawa back in 2001... luckily I have a good friend that owns an electrical company so it only cost me ~$4k to have it completely rewired, top to bottom  ;D

Yup, I had asbestos pipe wrap in that 1st house as well, actually in the 2nd one as well, along with the insulation in the attic, it had asbestos as well.

Yeah, BIL house is full of asbestos. He was very surprised when I told him. His attic is full of that asbestos crap and his basement has a bunch of tiles and wrapped pipes. They of course didn't get the house inspected and both of them are useless when it comes to anything to do with home repair

I wouldnt think a house inspectors would have caught that
Most commercial  Reno jobs come with a lab report if there any asbestos left in the building

Our house inspector specifically looked in the attic for that. OUr house was built in the 90's so not really a concern. The guy we had was very knowledgeable about asbestos.

Asbestos isn't really a problem unless you disturb it.  As soon as you want to start tearing things apart, then it becomes an issue.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
