Bought some used MG Midget bumpers for cheap while in Calgary. My Austin didn't come with a front one so hoping to use one of these. The front one looks like it might be too narrow but we'll see. The seller was an interesting guy. He had two Land Rovers, two MG Bs, a TR6 and a VW vanagon with a Subaru engine all stuffed into an inner city lot (with a triple garage). Oddly one of the MG Bs used to be owned by a friend of mine was going to receive a V8 engine as well as some back dating (banjo steering wheel, etc).

So I wanted to get some undercabinet lighting for the kitchen to both create nice accent lighting in the evening when the main kitchen light is off, and to function as task lighting when working on the countertops preparing food.  Our main kitchen light is a fluorescent tube light that lights up the kitchen brightly, but due to it's central location in the ceiling casts lots of shadows on the counter when you're working.

Turns out Ikea has a lot of affordable home lighting solutions.  I ended up buying 2x 3 packs and 1x 1 pack of LEDBERG for about $40 total.  The biggest advantage to their system is cost and the quality/type of light being thrown (seeing that they're LED spotlights, vs strips).  The disadvantage is that each 'kit' requires a separate plug and switch.  I solved these problems by drilling holes in the underside of the cabinets and running all the wires at the back of them.  I then installed a 3x powerbar INSIDE the corner cabinet, ran the plug through the bottom of the cabinet and plugged it into one of the counter plugs.  The 3 switches for the 7 lights got glued just inside the door of the corner cabinet, so to turn on/off all the lights you can just open one cabinet door and all the switches are lined up there ready for you.

The final result is....satisfying.  I'm really happy with how it looks.  It brightens up the kitchen just enough, and provides enough light so as to able to perform small tasks like pouring a drink even with the main kitchen light off.

Love it!  I'm a huge fan of turfing ceiling lights in favour of task lighting.  Makes for a much cozier home, IMO.  It's bad enough that I have to spend 8 hours a day under soul-destroying fluorescent ceiling lighting - I don't want any type of overhead light in my house, unless I'm in cleaning mode.

18" Winter wheels for the Q50S arrived today.  After purchasing two other sets that wouldn't clear the callipers, these better f'ing fit.  I purchased them directly from Infiniti, and they claim that they will.

Do they fit?

I picked up a chromecast 2.
I have been using the ps4 for netflix until now.
The quality seems good and I'm powering it off the USB port on the TV so it turns on and off automatically.
This gives me access to some neat other apps to stream that weren't possible on the ps4.

Yes. I bought one for Mrs.Firm for Christmas and she loves it.....Made me by her 2 more for the other TVs  :banghead:

Can the Chromecast stream video files off a windows PC?

How do you control it?  Does it come with its own remote?

Not sure yet.  We've had some recent snow so I haven't wanted to chance taking it out with 19" summer rubber on it......just asking for trouble.  I supposed to be sunny the rest of the week, so I'll wait for the roads to clear up entirely and get them installed.

You need a smartphone or computer to use the chromecast, it's not really a standalone device.

But works awesome and can stream videos off a pc various ways.   Using plex is the easiest I think,  or drag and drop to a browser.

So I went on a little bit of a buying spree at Ikea yesterday.  After talking over the plan with my wife, I bought the following:

2 Kallax 8x8 shelves:

16 Drona boxes, 8 black, 8 white

2 DIODER

So our Living Room doubles as a playroom (small house) and we have all sorts of toys and boxes and bins, as well as a couple of mismatched bookcases flanking our big couch on the wall opposite the TV.  It just looks fugly and cluttered.  SO, the plan is to replace the mismatched (and small) bookcases with the 2 big 8x8 Kallax units on either side of the couch.  In the bottom 8 boxes of the shelving units, We'll put the white and black Dronas boxes in a checkerboard pattern, to match the appearance of the TV wall that I set up this summer (see below).  The top eight squares will not have boxes, but rather will serve as spaces for books and for ornaments.  Again, a checkerboard pattern will prevail when determining which squares hold books and which hold ornaments.  For the squares that hold ornaments I will install one DIODER lamp in each space, giving some neat accent lighting.  The addition of the 16 DRONAS boxes on the bottom halves of the KALLAX units will allow me to get everything that is currently stored in miscellaneous bins and boxes on the floor and behind our loveseat stored away in a neat and organized manner, and it will free up a lot of floor area that can be used as playspace.

I also bought a bed, the MALM:

For the last 4 years our bed has consisted of a Queen mattress and a box-spring just sitting on the floor.  It was functional but it didn't look very nice.  Finally, we have a bed (my first time ever having a headboard).  This one also has drawers underneath it so we can store even more things (when you have a small house finding places to store things is hard).

^  Suggestion:  Move the tv down to get it at the proper viewing height, add another floating shelf below the outlet, then put something on the shelf in front to block its view and install racetrack to cover the rest of the exposed wiring.  Exposed wiring drives me nuts!  :P  Other than that it looks good.

Just curious, but why the blank wall plate?

The TV height is non-negotiable.  I wanted it lower, but for some reason my wife is adamant that is has to be higher.  Its current height is actually lower than what she wants.  Trust me, I've long advocated for a lower TV height, but for some reason she has this in her head, and well, I pick my battles.  As it is, it's not terrible.  when sitting on the couch, eye-level is at the bottom third of the TV so it's not too bad.

The blank wall plate is for the Coax.  I can have the coax coming out near the bottom of the wall (behind the storage unit like it currently is) or from the top.

Bought this avalanche beacon for the kid today - spent the day outside playing with it and two others I own.  This is one of the least expensive on the market, and WOW, it's amazing.  It's fast, has lots of features, and I'm super pleased with it.  Terrific value.

She starts her avalanche skills training for guides the weekend of the 16/17 and now she's "kitted out" with some great gear.

Pieps DSP Sport.

No - not her own yet - but soon.  When we're together she wears mine - but as she will be soon going out with other people, then yes, she will have one.  Probably this one...

I see there's an ON/OFF button on the beacon.

Are you screwed if you forget to turn it on?

standard procedure at the start of every trip is for somebody to put their beacon on receive .. and everybody walks by them well-spaced-out-single-file with theirs on transmit .. to ensure all is working... with the last 2 people switching roles at the end to make sure the "receiver" guys is working.

then they stay on until back-to-safety.

So .. yeah .. screwed if you don't have it turned on .. but that should never happen.

^^^^ This.  I've caught a few people over the years that forgot to turn it on, but it's rare - people tend to pay close attention to something so vital.

As for avalanche airbags, there's lots of research to show that they're very effective - but in certain instances only.  If you're strained over cliffs and/or rocks and trees, you can be killed by trauma of course, or if you're in a terrain trap and a large volume of snow comes from above, you're hooped.

But, in some cases, they work amazingly well.  It's about increasing your odds - and for people that get out a lot, it's good to have all the help you can.

Considering that 75% of deaths are from asphyxiation, no wonder they save lives.

I thought that trauma would have been a much higher percentage.
