LOL, following the code. I always do. Is there something illegal about putting a plug in the wall?
Just felt like needling somebody.
But just technically speaking, in Ontario a homeowner cannot make any addition whatsoever without taking out a permit which usually entails two visits from the Inspector on only one day of the week anywhere from 8:30 to 4:30 pm. Their fee schedule is so complex that I'm not going to bother looking at it to find the exact amount but it's probably about $140.00 tax in for a single thing. Electrical contractors pay about 1/2 that amount for the very same job, but if they are "top tier" the inspection usually doesn't occur.
My transfer switch fee was $270.
Normally, I would not take a permit out on "additions", but in the event of a fire either by electrical or NG source ANYWHERE in the house not related to the GEN, the Insurance Company would see the GEN and they would automatically ask for the Inspection Certificate. No certificate. No payout.
Other than fees $$$, some of the Inspectors can be real PIAs on the "letter of the code". I had a heck of a time with my Inspector over "unbonded neutrals".
IN SUMMARY, it is essential on these DIY wiring alterations and additions that you KNOW NOTHING and it was existing prior. Never confess to it.
