Honda cancels NSX
« on: December 17, 2008, 09:37:14 am »
Not only is Honda pulling out of F1, as we already know, but today they announced the cancellation of the NSX. In these econonmic times it probably makes a lot of sense and saves them even more money. Another sad reminder of the realities we are facing.

I never expected them to actually build it in the first place....

The S2000 is more fun anyway, and ~1/3 of the price.

No great loss as it was a "niche" car that sold in small numbers previously. As others have pointed out, the S2000 is still there and likely a better/less pricey car.

All of which makes me really wonder if the new Camaro will really see reality. It too is a niche car, will sell in relatively small numbers, and many will realize that, even if gas prices are low now, they will be higher again in the future. Once the Camaro-enthusiasts are satisfied, sales will be meager on the Camaro methinks.

The GT-R's image has been badly tarnished by the transmission failure scandal, and now the LF-A and the new NSX have been cancelled before reaching production.  So much for the era of the Japanese supercar.

Canceling a car because of bad economics today seems a little silly to me.  Wasn't it going to be a 2011 car anyway?  *shrug*  Maybe the global economy will rebound and we'll see it in 2015.

I think so.  The Mustang sells very well, and the Camaro with the V6 offers a fantastic combination of price, performance, and fuel economy.  They might have some trouble shifting the V8 models, I agree, but I think the V6 models have got some potential.  I would certainly consider one...

Maybe the global economy will rebound and we'll see it in 2015.

Of course the economy will re-bound.  It did after 1973, it did after the early 1980s, it did after Black Monday, it did aftre the early/mid 1990s, and it will after this.  It's called a business cycle.  Don't believe the hype.

The economy is like crack.  After every amazing high comes an incredibly crushing low.

Shame about the LF-A too, that had one of the best engine sounds I've ever heard.

Oh well, I wasn't planning to buy one any ways.

As long as Honda concentrates on parts to keep my Civic going for years to come, I'd be happy.  :)

Good analogy, but you're not looking back far enough. I get the feeling not too many people are worried about this as just another 'natural' business cycle resulting in a low lasting a year or two. There's more panic in this cycle, more fear that we're going to see something like the Crash of '29 which caused a decade-long depression. It took the Second World War to end that.

I'm skeptical of it lasting that long, I'm thinking 2 years maybe 3 though.

The world is more "global" then it was back in '29 but I am no economist that is for sure -- just have a tingly feeling :P

Surprise, surprise that this happened.

Even if times are good, like anybody would have purchased a Honda for $150K+ range. I harped on this in the (other) NSX thread so many times.

I have to applaud Honda for taking quick action to cut costs in the current financial climate. By realizing nobody will buy this thing and for pulling out of F1.

Regarding the financial crisis, this meltdown will actually be bigger than the great depression. At least back then people had savings and the U.S. actually produced things as apposed to being a 70% consumer based economy like it is now.

James, precisely because the economy is global this will impact us all. Remember all those sub-prime mortgage-backed-securities (MBS) were sold on the stock market to the world.
Who really knows how long it’ll last, but don’t believe the liberal media when they tell you things will start to pick-up in 6 months to a year.
And don’t forget Canada lags about 12 to 18 months behind the U.S. Sure we won’t get hammered as much as they did, but we will feel it. Especially with oil hovering around $43/barrel and the inventible job losses at the big three (even with a bailout).

Perhaps the NSX was scrapped because they coudn't figure out how to put that FUGLY shield grille on the front.
