Few questions:

Can it be on the counter?
Does she have an iPod?
Any computer(s) to stream music from?

We have no MP3 player (yet).  And don't use an PC/PS3 for streaming.  Definitely must be under cabinet.

What will be the music source then? Radio, CD?

I can't think of many under counter music players that aren't basically a clock radio. Maybe build a shelf under the cabinet to hold something nicer?

Or I guess a better question is, what does she expect from this (as in quality of sound)?

If you were streaming, something like this would be nice.

Radio or CD.  No streaming.  MP3 hookup would be a nice touch for future use.

You could bolt a spare car stereo unit under cabinet.   :)

I think we used to have a Sony unit way back when.

How about this:

http://goshopping.thestar.com/shop/product--catId_1001373__locale_en__productId_6268845.html

And the Bose Wave Radio II does have the under-counter mounting accessory available separately.  Click on the 'Accessories' tab to see it.

http://www.bose.ca/controller?url=/shop_online/wave_systems/wave_radio_ii/index.jsp

Having heard a Bose Wave, I can tell you that it's about the best you'll find for sound quality in such a small package.  Quite impressive.

Most under the cabinet CD players have very poor sound quality, due to the limited spaces for integrated speakers.

The Bose Wave does sound great, worth the money, IMO.

Another option is wirless speakers, or an  :light: iPod  :light: with a good docking unit.

I agree that Bose are overpriced but if you're looking for a 'turn-key' solution the Wave Radio does sound good.  It's also insanely expensive for what it is.

For the price of the Bose 'radio' I'm sure you could get an iPod and docking station with speakers....that would be my choice.

Not being Pod people we use a Bose  Wave unit with a Sirius receiver plugged into its Aux port as the main floor sound.  Small house helps this way.

So I might suggest a Sirius/XM in a docking station.     IMHO XM works better indoors, less sensitive to antenna placement.

We're running XM radio hard-wired with the docking station off the main amp, so the selection of music is wonderful, better than an iPod.

yes. Bob Dylan theme time and the Jazz on Sirius 72  as well as the "40's" for big bands.
