I do this all the time.  Last time I was at a restaurant and forgot if I had locked the car, it was parked pretty far away.  I hit the button 2 or3 times nothing.  Put it against my head and the lights went and the horn.

I want to know how/why that works.  Incredible.  I've heard about this before but have never actually seen it done.

One professor at the university where I went years back mention that the human body is about the equivalent of a 1 Kilo-Ohm conductor. So in a way, the body could act as a "wire", conduct electricity, and be an extension of an antenna.

Yeah...  same reason an FM radio sounds better when you touch the antenna to adjust it, but sounds like crap again when you take your hand away.

Does a key fob work on the same frequency band as FM?

Not quite.  FM (over here at least) uses the 87.5-108 Mhz band.  Remote Keyless Entry systems generally operate around 300 Mhz.  But they are both radio frequency devices, so the same principle applies.

Does the key fob use frequency modulation to communicate with your car as opposed to amplitude modification?

You should do a site survey before attempting this.  :P

If that is the case shouldn't you get the same effect from just holding the fob in your hand? Weird though...  :foil:

Only if you're giving me a digital spectrum analyzer for Christmas.  :)  They can cost as much as a car.

You can probably extend the range of your fob by installing an omnidirectional high gain antenna with same frequency range of your fob in your car.

Have you tried using your fob without touching it?  Maybe if you use your tongue...  :D

In theory, you should be right.  The bone structure of your head helps, I believe, but the different frequency band might make a difference, too...

Does the key fob use frequency modulation to communicate with your car as opposed to amplitude modification?

That depends on your car.  Does the horn honk in stereo, or mono?

In all seriousness, nothing I can find easily will say.  All just say it uses "radio frequency".  *shrug*

And, in case anyone is wondering, using your cell phone to unlock your car does not work.  :)

You could do it but you'll need a second cell phone wired to your car security system or have a bluetooth interface between the two.

Also works great for detonating your car bomb.  :)

OnStar is a different story.  That's a functionality built into the vehicle.  But most RKE systems use radio frequency, which cannot be transmitted by simply holding a key fob up to a cell phone.  I'll wager that method wouldn't even work with OnStar, since the remotes probably still use RF.
