Did you do a site survey before deciding where to locate the router/access point?   :)

LOL ! There are many enterprise wireless deployments running critical mobile applications that don't have a proper site survey or no site survey at all.

n router is the way to go.. if the signal is still weak return it.

IF you can wait till boxing day they give these things away (i bought a wireless router (not n) on boxing day in 2006 for 8$ from futureshop)
Still works.

I had the same problem with my old D-Link wireless G router. I always had to readjust the antenna on the computer in the basement (about 25ft away) to get a signal and sometimes there was no signal at all no matter what I did. I now have a 2Wire Gateway modem/wireless router that works great, no range issues at all.

Another thing I like about the 2Wire is that an indicator lights up to show when someone is trying to access my WEP encrypted network. That gives me the option of closing it down to prevent outside access.

Why do you use WEP?

WPA2 is available on almost all modern routers and OS. Just curious.

It is worth the effort to do a site survey.   I did one while installing my cheapie D-Link wireless router.  I can pick up the signal from anywhere in my house except the cold room under the patio.   I also adjusted the power output so that it doesn't go too far away from my house.   From the site survey I picked a less used channel.

Just a thought here, all the replies so far (except Saf's  :-\   :D ) question the router.  How about the wireless cards on the computers?  They are night/day with my 2 laptops, the new one picks up 2-3 times as many signals as the old one.  Maybe a new card would work?  Just a thought before you try pulling wire (insert Saf comment here   ;D ).

My new card supports 802.11 a/b/g/draft n, made by Intel (Model 4965AGN according to device manager) and it has SignalUp, maybe an Acer thing tho?.

If it's a Bell supplied modem/router and it's black in colour and a Speedstream it sucks.  To get the new version you gotta phone India and after a few minutes of some poor fellow telling you there is nothing wrong you say that you've had it and you're going over to the lite; Rogers.

The word "Rogers" is obviously well known in India.  :)  I received my new unit within a week. Works awesome and I have a 5 year old wireless card Linksys too.

It just made the switch-over from the D-link router easier - I didn't have to bother re-entering all those tedious codes. The signal from the 2Wire router doesn't reach further than about 20 feet from the house, so it's pretty unlikely someone's going to try logging in without me knowing about it. I keep the router turned off when it's not being used.

Wrong again    ::)

I said "if".  You've got their lastest version. The black Speedstreams were Bell's original modems/routers when they first offered the service and many customers are still stuck with them.

The unit they sent me this year is the white Gateway Unit with the code printed on the back so it would seem it's the same as your current one. Works awesome.  Unit is in the basement and you can capture the signal on both front and rear decks.  Your lack of signal must be at the computer end.

Don't be so sure about that Steve, I had the white Gateway Unit it was crap, I have an older Speedstream and it works better than the white one ever did.  The speestream still holds no candle to my d-link though with 2 antennas.

Opposite for me.  Had the original Bell supplied Speedstream (5 years ago or so) with the one antenna.  Kept jamming.  Then they sent me a few years later a Speedstream with 2 antennas (quite a bit larger, but no range) and now this white one which, with out going to look, I'm sure is a Gateway.   House has 3 laptops running off it if that makes a difference, I dunno.  No configuring required other than imputing the code which is in super tiny print.

How many versions of the white Gateway have there been I wonder.  :)

I have a 2Wire Gateway 2700HG-E. Every year or two I check with my ISP to see what their latest modem is, when I need to upgrade to the current model I just ask for one. I tell them I'm having some problem with mine and they usually ship the new modem in a few days. It helps if you don't have a contract and threaten to go to another ISP if they don't cooperate. The Gateway works great so far.
