Single Malt Slaughter....
« on: November 05, 2008, 06:57:52 pm »
Apparently, you'll no longer be able to buy such gems as Oban, Talisker, Lagavulin, and a few others in Canada.  The distributor wants to focus on other markets.

So I went to the local liquor store, and the Lagavulin 16 yr old was sold out. A woman went in last night and bought every bottle they had.  I did find some in another store, but they're going quickly.

If any of you are fans of scotch, you'd better stock up.  Even Johnnie Walker will be available no more:

"The single malt bottles that are on their way out of New Brunswick include Glenkinchie, Dalwhinnie, Talisker, Cragganmore, Oban, Lagavulin, Brora and Clynelish.

Johnnie Walker, Bell's Extra Special and J&B Rare, along with eight single malt scotches, are being pulled off of New Brunswick liquor store shelves as the distributor is looking to take the products elsewhere.

Dana Clendenning, president and chief executive officer of NB Liquor, said most Canadian provinces will soon be out of these brands of scotch as Diageo, the world's largest spirit supplier, is redirecting its products to more profitable markets in China, Russia and India.

"They advised us that due to limited supply they are reallocating their scotches to other markets that are more profitable to them, including Asian markets and India. This isn't the situation unique to NB Liquor, they are doing it to most, if not all liquor jurisdictions in Canada," Clendenning said.

I'm not sure about duty free, but NB has much better prices on single malts than Ont and Alberta.  It was a decision made by head office, to make NB a 'destination' for single malt lovers.

For instance, the Lagavulin 16 yr old is $125.00 in Ont; $77.85 in NB!!!

The Lagavulin 16 is (or was, I guess) about the same price in Alberta, 85.00 or so. You just have to be careful where you buy it.

Lagavulin and Talisker taste like iodine mouthwash anyway.  Good riddance.   ;D

You've got to have at least one bottle from each region, just for the tasting... ;D

I'm not really into the peaty ones but Caol Ila 18yr is my fave.

Won't matter a bit to me, never have acquired any taste at all for Scotch. In fact, no whiskey appeals to me. Maybe drinking a 26er of Schenley's Golden Wedding after 2nd Yr U exams in about 4 hours has something to do with my lasting dislike for whiskey. Avoided alcohol poisoning, but I sure was sick for about 2 days after... :P :P :P

Damn.  Lagavulin is one of my favorites (along with a the other islays).  That said, the incremental price increases over the last few years have put it miles above my budget.

It's a good thing I'm heading to the states this weekend.  No doubt there will be a stop at the duty free for a nice bottle to keep me going through the winter.

Last trip to Europe we did tastings every night at the hotel bar, as I am a Scotch rookie. The Macallan 15 was my fav as well. That is the only Scotch I now keep in the house.

Railton - Is it the 10 year old or 12 year old?

10 year old - Not a bad deal
12 year old - Excellent deal

The Macallan is a quintessential highland.  Lighter, easy (for scotch, anyway) on the palette and smooooooth.  They also age their scotch in sherry casks giving them a richer colour and interesting flavour.
