Ford Releases 2010 Fusion Info
« on: October 29, 2008, 04:05:18 pm »
For 2009, the 2010 model year Fusion and Milan will offer Ford's all-new Duratec 2.5-liter I-4, producing 175 horsepower; an enhanced 3.0-liter V-6 with 19 more horsepower than its predecessor; and a 3.5-liter V-6 that pumps out 263 horsepower on the Fusion Sport model.

The 2.5-liter I-4

First launched on the fuel-economy segment leader 2009 Ford Escape, Ford's all-new Duratec 2.5-liter I-4 gives the 2010 Fusion 175 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque, 14 more horsepower and 16 more lb.-ft. of torque than the preceding year's 2.3-liter engine.

The 2.5-liter uses intake variable cam timing (iVCT) technology to optimize valve timing, creating a broad torque curve that helps deliver increased power along with improved efficiency.

The powertrain also incorporates electronic throttle control (ETC), dual-mode crankshaft damping, new intake and exhaust manifolds, and a new underbody-only catalyst, which refine performance and contribute to greater fuel efficiency.

The 3.0-liter V-6

The improved 3.0-liter V-6 available on the 2010 Fusion delivers 19 more horsepower and 23 more lb.-ft. of torque for a total of 240 horsepower and 228 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 3.0-liter features a new air induction system and ETC as well as an industry-first Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) iVCT technology that uses available camshaft torsional energy rather than pressurized oil to phase the camshafts. This allows for a smaller displacement oil pump versus traditional hydraulic VCT systems for improved fuel economy.

"With this technology, we are taking energy that is in your engine today – energy that was previously wasted – and using it to make an engine more efficient," said Steve Wilkie, supervisor of Cam Drive/VCT Design. "The cam torque actuated technology is a significant player in the 3.0-liter's ability to provide customers fuel economy and performance."

This innovative method uses torsional energy to move the camshafts similar to the way a hydraulic ratchet works. The system takes oil from one side of the phaser and channels it to the other side, rather than draining one side and filling the other as with a traditional hydraulic system. This allows the CTA system to work more efficiently at all engine speeds and it requires a smaller oil pump, which equates to lower parasitic energy loss.

CTA reduces oil pump flow requirements by approximately 25 percent, producing a fuel economy benefit up to 0.4 percent. In addition, the CTA-based system responds more quickly than a traditional hydraulic oil actuated VCT system, improving tip-in performance feel and contributing to horsepower gains.

The 3.0-liter is also flex-fuel capable and can run on E85, helping Ford deliver on a pledge made to double annual production of vehicles capable of running on renewable fuels by 2010.

The 3.5-liter V-6

The award-winning Duratec 3.5-liter V-6 joins the Fusion lineup for 2010, powering the Sport model with a beefy 263 horsepower and 249 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 3.5-liter uses a compact, lightweight dual-overhead cam valvetrain for peak power and smooth operation at high RPMs. This engine also incorporates intake variable cam timing to optimize valve timing for a smooth idle and an impressive broad torque curve with good power. A high 10.3:1 compression ratio and aluminum cylinder heads designed for high airflow and optimized combustion help complete the package, supporting the engine's ability to deliver great performance and fuel economy, along with low emissions.

I don't hink so -- it's on the Ford site and they wouldn't show something in that context that isn't finalized for production. And given Ford's recent penchant for rolling out truly ugly cars like the Focus and the Flex, I am willing to bet this is the production version.

Maybe Ford is going for the 60+ crowd who equate chrome with "expensive" cars.

Gawd, that massive chrome grille is horrendous.

Yikes.  Painful.

I wish that they'd made the post-facelift Fusion just look like the pre-facelift Mercury Milan.  Classy and timeless.

Your giving the majority of the population far to much credit. Not many people think beyond the moment..
That said, I actually kind of like it. Think of this way. It would look even worse with a bow tie on it.   ;D

Where are the turbocharged eco-boost cars?

Lincoln will be the first brand under Ford’s umbrella to offer the Ecoboost engine, starting as an optional engine in the 2010 Lincoln MKS that is scheduled to begin production at the Chicago plant in summer 2009.

One month after the engine’s debut in the MKS, Ford’s three-row Flex crossover SUV will receive the Ecoboost engine. For the 2011 model year there will be a version available in the F-150.
This will be a be a high-volume effort. Ford expects Ecoboost production to be available in 90% of its lineup as standard or optional equipment by 2013, and is using the technology as a way to help meet impending CAFE regulations and decrease emissions.
Ecoboost technology will eventually be used in smaller and more fuel efficient four-cylinder applications starting in 2010, but in which models and what size are still unannounced.
http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2008/10/ecoboost-on-its.html

Looks like Euro market will see the lower displacement eco-boost before N.A.

Ford has announced a new $110 million investment program at its high-tech Bridgend engine plant in Wales to produce a next generation low-CO2 1.6L four-cylinder petrol engine as part of its EcoBoost range. The new engine will be the first EcoBoost engine to be sold in Europe when it debuts in 2010.

The 1.6L engine will go into production within two years and will be among the first of Ford’s new-generation of global petrol powertrains featuring turbocharging and direct injection technology in a low displacement unit.

Seriously though, how long does it take to add a turbo to all the models.  Surely in a year they have figured out all the packaging details, they have test mules -- just release the damn thing -- it might be a great thing for them!

anyone know if there is going to be ESC next year?  I could buy one of these if it had ESC.  I am so frustrated by the lack of ESC on Canadian 4-cylinder cars.  Often they are available in the USA but not here (ex.  Honda Fit, Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata).

It is available on the Malibu, Accord and Camry but I don't want any of those.  It is on the new Mazda6 but I am reulctant to buy a first model year Mazda until reliability ratings are out as their first year cars are far from a sure thing (see recent cx-7 and cx-9).  I would also buy the Sonata but no ESC in Canada and the USA version is not any cheaper right now and you forfeit the warranty.

Canadian divisions of these companies need to start demanding ESC for us.

Any car looks bad with bug guts all over it.  If you're concerned about how well it will age, remember instead that flat surfaces are easier to clean than complex surfaces, and that chrome doesn't chip like paint does.

I don't like how it looks--I prefer the old Fusion--but "difficult to maintain" is the wrong reason to criticize this sort of grill.

Ford's new hybrids go 47 mph on electric power alone

Richard Truett
Automotive News
October 29, 2008 - 5:15 pm ET

DETROIT -- The hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans that start production in December should give drivers who like electric cars a nice jolt.

The sedans will be able to reach a top speed of 47 mph on electric power alone -- twice as fast the current Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrid crossovers -- and can travel as far as eight miles on battery power before the gasoline engine engages.

In a preview of the two vehicles today, Ford executives gave reporters a close look at the two vehicles and explained how they work. They also showed a smaller but more powerful battery pack that will cost less than the one now used in the Escape, Mariner and Mazda Tribute crossovers.

These two hybrid sedans may be the most technically sophisticated regular production vehicles Ford Motor Co. has ever made. They feature:

• An electric air conditioning system that keeps the car cool even when the gasoline engine is off

• A multilayered powertrain information system that uses two programmable screens on either side of the speedometer to "coach" the driver on how to get better fuel economy

• A smaller but more powerful nickel-metal hydride battery pack that uses a simpler cooling system than the one Ford developed for its first hybrids, the Escape and Mariner

• A new energy management system that varies the voltage to the electric motor and battery pack for more efficient operation.

Best in class

Nancy Gioia, Ford's director of sustainable mobility and hybrid programs, said the hybrid versions of the Fusion and Milan will deliver best-in-class fuel economy.

"We are at least 5 mpg better than the Toyota Camry Hybrid in city driving, and we'll beat Camry on the highway," she told reporters.

Ford did not give the EPA figures for the Fusion and Milan hybrids, but the EPA rates the Camry at 33 mpg city and 34 highway.

Ford says both cars will be able to travel more than 700 miles in the city on one tank of gasoline. The engine for the Fusion and Milan hybrids is a 155-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a continuously variable transmission.

When the Fusion and Milan reach full production next year, Ford aims to double its annual output of hybrid vehicles from 25,000 to 50,000. Ford executives would not say how many Fusions and Milans would be built, but the Fusion will make up the majority of production, said J.D. Shanahan, chief engineer for the Fusion and Milan.

Eye on profit

The boost in production coupled with the new battery pack could enable Ford to turn its first profits on hybrids. In the past, Gioia has said the path to profitability for hybrids is to boost volume while reducing the cost of components.

The new battery pack uses 17 percent fewer cells yet is 20 percent more powerful than the batteries in the Escape and Mariner. It also is 23 percent lighter and uses 30 percent less space than the pack now in the Escape and Mariner hybrids. A new cooling system also is less expensive. Instead of using the vehicle's air conditioner to keep the batteries cool, the new pack uses air from the car's interior.

Ford also showed other versions of the 2010 Fusion and Milan. A new performance-oriented model of the Fusion, the Sport, will offer a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 263 hp. All versions of the 2010 Fusion and Milan will offer six-speed transmissions.

The four-cylinder entry-level versions will be available with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. The V-6 versions will come with a six-speed automatic only. Shanahan said all versions would deliver class-leading or class-competitive fuel economy in their segments.
