New Toronto Vehicle Tax
« on: October 29, 2008, 07:49:06 am »
What is Miller doing to us in Toronto ?  They waste money and then they need more money....from the average "Joe"....

First of all Mayor Miller froze fees that the big developer have to pay to the city because of the current economic situation!

Then for the average "Joe" he has done this so far...

1.Land Transfer taxes were suppose to provide the money they needed. Didn't

2.Garbage collection charges from the new blue and grey boxes..not enough money again.

3.mpac over assesses your home....still not enough money for Mayor Miller

4.New TORONTO  car tax came in the mail yesterday...

When is he going to stop taxing us?

When the residents of TO stop voting for socialists,

It will get worse. The provincial government still has not "uploaded" welfare to the provincial level where it belongs and so if there is more unemployment in TO  you will have to pay with your property taxes.

From a selfish POV I am glad that I don't have to pay for TO's welfare from my provincial income tax.

Toronto is a mega city (even though the population numbers are low) compared to Canada's other cities. Contributes almost 10% to Canada's GDP and approx 20% of Onatrio's GDP. Approximately 8% of Canada's total population lives in Toronto.

Financially prudent government in Toronto is crucial, its almost like a province. As tpl said, the provincial government has to take back the welfare program. Take TTC out of TO's politicians and transfer it to a GTA based authority.

Infrastructure investment needs a boost from all levels of government in major urban centers.

That's what we get for electing an NDP leader (again).  Sadly, the city does not learn from mistakes.

Miller may be an ineffectual twit but for a city the size of Toronto the system we have of government by committee is a farce. It doesn't really matter who the Mayor is as every major issue has to go through the full council anyway and all policymaking in Toronto ends up dissolving into pathetic bickering matches leaving the bureaucrats to do whatever they want without oversight. The whole system is dysfunctional.

I agree with Wolfe, vdk, BJB.  BUT I think that Toronto's real problem is that it does not charge for services what they actually cost PLUS an allowance for improvement.  Every year the council meanders around the budget trying to cut corners here and there.
Example.  If you need $300MM a year to fix the roads and $200MM a year to fix the water system then add that to the property tax.   Infrastructure you just have no choice but to pay for it
In the middle , if the Police decide they have to have more officers or newer cars that is the time to negotiate and maybe to tell them no.  If the directly employed city workers want a big raise, negotiate but be prepared to put the work out to contract

However, if you need $20MM a year to keep the school swimming pools open then have a plebiscite. Firstly on the general populace who pay education taxes and if they are willing then thats ok. If not then just on the parents, if they are willing then thats ok to. Else shut them down.

Maybe that will cause  property  taxes to rise by 10 or 20%. So what? There are plenty of people who would be happy to live in a functional city and pay the shot.   If taxes rise.. then some will move out. Ok.

Before doing any of this get rid of all the NDP fellow travelers on council  especially the Mayor, and replace them all with Tory voting small businessmen and women.

The main problem is urban sprawl. The cost of building and maintaining infrastructure increases faster than the increasing population can support at a given tax rate. The low population density that encompasses most of the metro area simply compounds the problem.

Good luck with that!
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Quite right.   All those empty buses zooming around North York and Scarborough.   But thats why the tax rates have to rise whether the people like it or not.

I fly into and out of the Big Smoke on a regular basis, eternally grateful that I don't live there.

Freddy is small and a bit dull, but I can bike to work in 20-25 minutes, live within a short walk to my optometrist, dentist, physiotherapist, pharmacy, lawyer, barber shop, butcher shop, baker, grocery store, bank, pub, nature park and neighbourhood schools. Plus housing is cheap, taxes are low and the pay is quite good. ;D
