Ouch... not liking that front end at all.  Looks like a fish of some sort.

Get your '09 models while you still can!

LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW
...
The 2.5-liter engine makes 167 hp, up from 148 hp for the 2.3 liter. Torque is 168 pounds-feet, up from 135 pounds-feet.
...

Silly author. :nono:   The 148 hp and 135 lb-ft are for the current 2.0L engine not the current 2.3L engine.  The current 2.3L engine makes 156 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque.

Did anyone see any numbers in regards of the weight of the new model? I'm just curious if Mazda managed to keep the weight down (less than 3000 lbs.).

BTW: Mazda3 got 6 airbags for the MY06.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 2.0L  MT 2868 AT 2928
                          2.5L MT 2963 AT 3025

The only dimensions that have changed is length , being about 3 inches longer.

http://www.mazdausamedia.com/files/2010%20MAZDA3%20SPEC%20DECK%204-Door%20updated.pdf

So the new one is 90 lbs heavier for the 2.0L manual and 120 lbs heavier for the 2.0L automatic.  The 2.5L manual is only 35 lbs heavier than the 2.3L manual while the 2.5L is only 45 lbs heavier than the 2.3L automatic.

The attention to small details on this car are quite amazing.

Here's the hatch version:

So far so good but it also looks like the used the same 'good' angles they did for the sedan. I'm just hoping they made the trunk bigger than the previous model.

I wonder if they will keep the 2.0L in the hatch?

I hope they keep the 2.0L in the hatch.  They'd be silly not to with our current past (and presumably future) gas prices.

The hatch is very similar to the Matrix.

That's funny as I was kind of thinking the same thing. I'm sure they drive different though  ;D

New Mazda3 hatchback to be unveiled in Bologna

Richmond Hill, Ontario - Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the world premiere of the all-new Mazda3 Sport hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show on December 3, 2008. The second-generation Mazda3 Sport follows the introduction of the sedan version, which was unveiled at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new model will include such key features as Bluetooth, adaptive auto-levelling bi-xenon headlamps, advanced keyless entry system, and pushbutton start.

In Canada, the model will include an improved version of the current 148-horsepower 2.0-litre engine, and a new 2.5-litre engine that produces a maximum output of 167 horsepower. The new engine, introduced in the 2009 Mazda6, replaces the previous 2.3-litre version.

Both engines will feature the world’s first vehicle catalyst to be constructed with single nanotechnology, which enables Mazda to reduce its use of platinum and palladium.

Once again (IMO) the hatch version looks better than the sedan version.

I like the looks of the 2010 hatch, and it will for sure be on the wife's "check-out" list for Spring 2009 replacement of the HL.

The MS3 will be on my list too...

Have any details been given on this front (i.e. specs, release date)?

I wonder if they'll make it AWD (like the MS6 was) this time around to better compete w/ the WRX/Evo/R32?

Nothing solid out there, just rumour. However, seems like everyone thinks it will stay FWD with a 2.5 turbo instead of 2.3 putting out around 300 HP, with the same power reduction in the lower gears. The low cost way for them to go I guess.

Please Mazda, equip the MS3 with a DSG style transmission...

The Mazda3 platform was also designed for AWD applications, so that's not a stumbling block. If they increase the power while keeping it FWD they might want to rename it the Mazda3 Viggen.

Considering its fairly low sales I don't expect to see a second generation Mazdaspeed6 (at least not here in NA) so making the new MS3 AWD wouldn't cannibalize sales. :-\

There was a guy from somewhere around Toronto swapping the drivetrain from a wrecked Mazdaspeed6 into a regular 3. IIRC he was using the rear subframe from a Volvo S40.

Considering Mazdaspeed3 can win comparison tests against its AWD competitors, while simultaneously being lower priced, I suspect Mazda will stick with a similar formula for the next MS3.

When did you become a politician..? :rofl2:

Adding DSG ups the development costs for both models.
