If the trend of getting larger and larger continues, this will almost be a direct replacement for first gen mazda 6...

I could see it slightly upsizing if the Mazda2 comes here as well for the smaller-is-better crowd.

Go look at the numbers from Aug 2008 sales - 36,000 compared to 42,000. The M3 is close to the Corolla. In 2007 the M3 outsold the Corolla, 36,000 units compared to the Corollas 30,000. With the new design it will likely do it again in 2009-2010.

Yea.  Canada only.  I look at North America.  Corolla Top 5.  Mazda3 not even in Top 10.
I live in Canada and that's what I look at. Why would I care what sells in Maine or Vermont, where they can even sell Saab product.

Actually Mazda could have sold many many more Mazda3's but they can't produce enough of them fast enough!

When the Mazda3 originally came out it was beating the corolla and civic in sales but then they ran out and people settled for the civic mostly as it was once again the sales leader.  Until Mazda starts building them here they won't be able to build enough of them to meet demand.

I like the new Mazda3 without being overwhelmed. Regardless, it is once again the best looking car in the segment. I don't think it will be the best-selling car in the class, but it will remain on top, up there with the Civic and Corolla.

One thing went unnoticed; according to the Autocar (UK), which claims it drove a pre-production car, the 2.0 engine is a direct-injection version.  Autoblog states the 2.0 engine is a carryover, but Mazda PR only states the displacement and nothing else. Putting one and one together, it seems like we might be getting the 2.0 DI engine.

Mazda has diesels available in Europe, but I guess they are not bringing them over for the same reason the rest of the manufacturers aren't.

The Autocar.co.uk article here:

" After a short, but fast drive around the Icelandic coast in the late-model 3 prototypes, there’s no doubt that Mazda has made a major leap forward with its new direct-injection engines.

The new 2.0-litre DI engine – driving a very slick six-speed manual ‘box – is impressively smooth, refined and torquey.

While the revamped 3 still delivers the sensation of being a more compact, handy and pointable car than is common in this class, this petrol engine feels broad shouldered and bigger than its quoted capacity. It has something of feel of the old Golf V5 – a relatively compact car with a satisfyingly punchy engine.

However, the real surprise comes from the 2.2-litre diesel. Not only is this motor also exceptionally refined, it also has quite exceptional pace, especially in the compact 3. Very well matched with the ratios in the six-speed ‘box, the 2.2 had standout overtaking ability – always a good indication of real-world performance. Indeed, such is the engine’s mid-range muscle, Mazda engineers admitted that this model has superior performance to the current 3 MPS.

One problem that affected both cars was tyre noise, long a weak spot on certain Mazda models. But defining the extent of the problem was very difficult because not only are Iceland’s roads some of the noisiest in the developed world, these prototype cars didn’t have the final specification (quieter) tyres fitted.

Even so, it's clear that the next Mazda 3 will be a big improvement over the current car."

If it had a small displacement V6, or engine/tranny from the CX-7 it would be a riot.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

I'd say the CX-7 should have a small displacement V6, but for the 3 it would be overkill. The 2.3 I4-turbo doesn't seem to do very well on CX-7 application. For now, I'd even say Mazda should put the new 2.5L I4 in the CX-7.

I think the new 2.5L I4 is more than enough for the 3. It's not a heavy car and even with the old 2.3 I4 it's quite peppy

I am a big fan of Turbo / Supercharged engines, hence we own a CX-7 and a Millenia. If all they had were a normal V6, the driving characteristics and power output would be different, however the peak horse power number might be. A V6 is more front end heavy, a Turbo I4 is way more fun, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I own a Mazda3, I like Mazdas in general and the the CX-7 in particular. I just think that a naturally aspired engine, small V6 that is, would've been a better choice for a CUV. The CX-7 is quite heavy the way it is (around 3,900 lb. with AWD IIRC).
On the other hand, the Mazdaspeed3 with that engine is sweet.
I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

Personal preference, exactly. I have spend a few hours in a V6 Mazda6 while the CX-7 was in for a tire change. The sales manager loan me his demo. The V6 in the 6 doesn't have enuff low end torque with the auto transmission, would be slower (in feel) in the CX-7.

That looks REALLY good.  It looks like a Mazda3...so they haven't lost anything there.  But its substantially changed in the details and they did a great job.  Very sleek.

I look forward to seeing many of them driving around here before too long.

As much as the new 2.5L MZR sounds great for the Mazda3...I'm slightly more interesting in hearing what Mazda has to say about their new DI 2.0L.  Might be the perfect balance of power and fuel economy if they get that one right.  With the car being lighter, the base engine being more powerful than before, and if fuel economy can stay the same or get better...that new 2.0L might be perfect.  The 2.5L then being for incredible amounts of power.

I almost bought the current/previous gen of Mazda3 but had trouble with the driving position.  Almost wish I waited...although very happy with my car.

Looks very sharp. I'm not keen on the tail lights tho assume they may be changed for North America like they have been for the 6. Certainly a hotly anticipated new model. The 2.0DI is of more interest to me as well.

Looks good. Very stylish. Even the mkI does very well when compared to the new civics, 'rollas, sentras etc. MKII will certainly set the bar even higher in this segment.
Comparing a Corolla to a Mazda3 is ridiculous. If you want an appliance get the Toyota. Mazda3 is fun. It proves that cheap doesn't mean it has to be dull and cookie-cutter.

btw rrocket, that old Fast 'n Furious mobile is not Made in Canada. A Camaro Z28 is however. But I won't tell. :-*

I am sure it is not an enviable task for Mazda to re-design this car.  Let's hope it doesn't gain any weight or loose any of it's handling.

Like everyone else here, I'd like to see the 2.0 DI with a 6-speed.
