Despite credit crunch, Ferrari's California is sold out

Ferrari is not feeling any effect from the global financial crisis.

The Italian sports car maker expects record sales in 2008. Its latest model, the California convertible, already is sold out until 2011.

"Ferrari sales are growing everywhere and we expect full-year results to set a new company record," Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said on the sidelines of the California unveiling at the Paris auto show

The California is Ferrari's first model with a retractable hard top. The car will go on sale in Europe in January with prices starting at 179,000 euros.

"We have already sold out the California's entire 2009 and 2010 production," Montezemolo said.

He said 60 percent of buyers who have ordered a California have never bought a Ferrari before.

Montezemolo said Ferrari will not increase the planned production of 2,500 to 2,800 Californias in 2009 and about 3,000 in 2010.

Montezemolo said one effect of the credit crunch is a decline in orders from buyers who buy a Ferrari, then sell it for a profit even before they receive the car.

"We had unacceptably long waiting lists caused by too many people who were not buying the car they ordered, but were reselling their order at a profit," he said.

"It was pure speculation – luckily now it is over," Montezemolo said.

obviously, ppl who can afford those things don't need loans to buy them.. and of course they're not effected much at all by the harsh times in the States.. they just got a $850 billion bailout plan.. didn't they?

Have to agree with vdk. The people who buy these kind of vehicles are immune to market ups and downs. When we were at the Lexus dealer this weekend the salesman was telling us the wait in Russia for the Lexus LX570[toyota land cruiser] was 2 1/2 years.

When ever the market is moving...there is money to be made.

A buddy of mine has been shorting the TSX for a while now.  He made $3,500 in 25 minutes yesterday.  And yes...not ever day is like that!

On topic - Ferrari was doing much more "selling" at the Paris Auto Show then they do at the Toronto Autoshow.  I realize there are many factors (Canada not a big market, Paris being only once every two years, Paris being Paris...)...it was just interesting to see.

By the time these people receive there cars some of them may have lost there millions.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

A lot of high end car manufacturers went out of business over the years thinking the same thing. Not may new Pierce Arrows, Duesenburgs, or Cords on the road now are there?

At various times Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin even Porsche (though not to the same extent) etc have been at death's door. That's why they've been bought out by larger companies (again with the exception of Porsche).
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

No, Porsche brought out a well-selling but (arguably) 'inauthentic' vehicle, the Cayanne, in order to survive.

The start of Porsche's turnaround from near-death was the Boxster.  Sold tons, made good money.  The Cayenne simply made them silly-wealthy (enough to buy up that controlling stake in VW).
