Real World Fuel Economy Web-site..
« on: September 24, 2008, 06:43:13 am »
I just found this site...looks decent and is easy to use.  I've signed up (it's free).  Useful for seeing real world MPG for your car..or maybe one you are intending on buying.  I've added my Echo to the database.

Really interesting idea for a web site, except bad site design makes it pretty meaningless. It should be redesigned ASAP so that every entry require much more detail or they aren't included. In other words, 'all fields required', basic stuff for a web site.

For example already there are 350 or so Accords. What year, engine, transmission + is it highway mileage, city, or 1/4 city 3/4 highway etc.... As a result of none of these items being mandated, there is no point looking at the results.

Another website I have found useful is fueleconomy.org which spits out the adjusted EPA ratings of cars (data output in mpg or L/100kms).

On the top LH side of the page, once you are logged in, you can change it to "Metric" or "US" to get your preferred measurement.  In the running totals, once the car has enough data, it should the life average in both MPG and L/100km.

Yea..but what find about that web-site is it doesn't accurately reflect real-world use.  For example, in my Echo, I regularly get significantly more MPG than the web-site. EPA rates it at 37 MPG (6.35 L/100km) vs. my 45 MPG+ (low 5 to high 4's L/100km).  A very significant difference....But a god site to get baselines...

So what's to stop people from bloating their estimates?

The only thing I use fuel economy numbers for, is comparison shopping for cars. For that I want realistic mileage figures. I can get those from www.fueleconomy.gov. I couldn't care less what some 16 year old, fanboy, hypermiler claims to be getting.

My Outback gets over 100mpg. SRSLY.

I've only seen a couple bloated figures.....FWIW, most of the Outbacks average is about 24-25 US MPG (9.5L/100km or so).

Is that about what you're getting??

Mile is a unit of measure for distance and gallon is a unit of measure for volume.  Do they still teach them in school?   :)

Many of my kids have no idea of what an ounce, gallon, or mile is.  Honestly.  Oddly, they weigh themselves in pounds and kilos and measure themselves in ft/in and centimeters.  I gave the grade eights a worksheet with a "so and so walked five miles" and they knew miles were a measurement of distance, but they had no idea of the relative distance.  They wanted me to convert it to kilometers so they'd "know how far it is."

I understand.....doesn't seem totally odd to me.  Metric measurement is the way we do things here.  I know that engineers in Europe and Japan when I spoke to them in inches asked me to put it into Metric.

It just depends what you grew up with...

I registered both my cars on the site, but as the 'Rolla has almost a half tank of gas left, might be sometime before it gets on the site...

What the hell are "miles" and "gallons?"

Miles are a measure of distance for sturdy English Yeomen to walk to the pub.

Gallons are milk from cows or the amount of weak English ale one could drink in an evening and still walk those miles back to ones village.

Real Human sized measurements

o,As distinct from wimpy little kilometres and litres invented by French bureacrats   8) ;D ;D

There's a guy with a Forester that's averaging in the 6's.  Doubtful.  Ignore the extremes (high and low) and look at what most people are averaging...

by the way, my neighbour has a CR-V, and he says they are in the 9-10L/100km range for city driving.
