Looking for GPS system
« on: August 30, 2008, 11:15:16 am »
I would like to buy a portable GPS navigator for my car. I travel to Europe (Italy mostly) so it is vital that it has European maps.

Do not know much about it but my wifey did some shopping around for my birthday and found that the requirement for European maps complicate things. I check out consumer reports but being a US based company they think the world ends at their border, so they do not provide any info about getting maps for Europe.

We would like to find a unit with maps of both North America and Europe pre-loaded. I would also like it to have voice commands.

Anybody have any advice on this.

Thanks

Garmin NUVis can be bought with the euro  and NA maps maps loaded.

try this

http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/nuvi370.htm

the 370 doesn't have voice commands but I think there is another NUVI that has both euro maps and voice commands.

I have a Garmin myself. If I was buying now I would probably purchase a TomTom. Just another brand to consider

The TomTom GO920 has both euromaps built in and voice commands.

My wife has a Garmin and while on holidays I selected the avoid traffic option which resulted in misinformation while traveling. I almost urinated in my pants.  :rofl2: :rofl2: I fail to understand how such an intelligent person requires a navigation gadget.

We have a Garmin in the rental, and it's rubbish.  I'd go for TomTom next time.

It pronounces Northfield Dr W as "Northfield Doctor West", and King St W as "King Saint West"...  :banghead:

I have heard both of those mistakes and others.

I give in.  Why "Bob Loblaw"   rather that, say, "Bob Sobeys" or " Bob Dominion"

I have a Nextor which has a 7" screen on it. It works extremly well  and has all the functions including your speed at all times which is handy. Mine is a little over a year old and can be taken anywhere as long as there is a cig lighter or aux plug in the vehicle.  :)

Did some research online and found Garmin Nuvi 270 to be pretty highly rated. It has European maps loaded on it.

On sale ($140 off) at Costco.ca for $219.99 including shipping.

Found very good reviews on this. 69 users gave it 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com. Much of the negative comments were about using it when walking. My intentions are to use it strictly in the car.

Any comments on this choice?

Thanks

Go for the Nüvi 270, you can not go wrong at that price. I have the 360 and I am quite happy with it. Yes, the text-to-speech voice commands are sometimes funny, but it is not such a big deal. And as you have probably found out in your research, the Navteq maps that come with most Garmins are considered the better choice for North America, as opposed to TeleAtlas maps.

Do the GPS devices allow you to select accents ? There are certain accent(s) I would prefer, and also by definition, avoid.

Yes! On my Garmin 350 there are many different options after I updated it. I have it on the Austrailian Male and he does make some pretty humerous gaffes sometimes. He gets my street right (and pronounces it "Drive") yet calls the next street over "Dr. West"). As others have noted different gaffes happen with different accents.

Now I typically leave the volume off and glance down at the GPS from time to time. What I really like about my Garmin is that if I touch the lower right of the screen it will change to another screen showing the upcoming turn. So, it I know I need to turn in a km then I can "cheat" and find out whether I need to make a left or right turn. Very handy to know ahead of time; especially in Toronto traffic (it came in handy last week in Ottawa as well).

I am very happy with my Garmin and will buy the European SD card when I next travel there and take my 350 with me.

I like GPS units mostly for the map itself, not the actual turn by turn directions which I rarely use.  I like seeing what streets are coming up since roads signs are very hard to read or see at all.
