Camaro vs. Challanger vs. Mustang
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:39:17 pm »
I know that the pony cars are not very popular on this form, but given the fact that the Camaro first drives are all over the car web sites, I was wondering what would be your pick out of the three (I know the Mustang will be new for 2010, but still).
I'd go for Camaro although I have zero interest in this type of car.

I love the Mustang, but I'd go for the Camaro just because the design looks fresher.

Truth be told, if I were going to blow big money on a V-8 pony car, I'd still rather have an old one.  I'd find a 70 1/2-71 Camaro and build a fast machine and have no electronics, no black-box, no OBD-II, etc.  Even with the leaf spring solid axles those old cars can be made to handle not-too-badly, and big brakes solve that big problem.

The true joy of American Iron is the simplicity of the big V-8 and no technology...

It seems like the V6 Camaro will start around $25K US so not very expensive. Unless one would like the big thing ...

A quick read through a Road and Track review on it and this poops out
Quote
With 300 bhp on tap from its direct-injected 3.6-liter dohc V-6, Chevy expects that the car, with additional tweaking, may be capable of breaking the 6-second mark going 0-60 mph by the time it is launched, while delivering highway mileage in the high 20s with a sticker in the mid-$20,000 range.
Very nice! Sold  ;D

Ooh, good question.

The Mustang doesn't really light my fire.  Maybe it's too common already, so it doesn't have that X-factor for me.  And the live axle really limits its suspension performance compared with the new Camaro and Challenger.

The Camaro is the one my brain wants.  The G8 handles remarkably well, and the Camaro should handle even better given its much smaller size.  And the direct-injection V6 should give better weight balance and better fuel economy than a traditional V8, while still delivering roughly 300 horsepower.  But subjectively, I think the styling job is cartoonish, and the Camaro will always be the doing-burnouts-in-Walmart's-parking-lot car for me.  Unfair and irrational bias against the name, but that's how I feel.

The Challenger is the one my gut wants.  Objectively, I should hate it.  Admittedly, the partly-Mercedes-sourced interior makes it handle like the original Challenger never did.  But it's heavy, the interior is craptastic, fuel economy is painfully bad (2 mpg worse than my wife's truck).  But damn, that car is cool.  I loooooooooove the design and I loooooooooove the noise it makes.

And if I were buying a pony car, I'd go with my gut over my brain.  Because if my brain ruled, I wouldn't be getting a pony car at all.  So I'll take a black Challenger RT with a pistol-grip six-speed manual, thankyouverymuch.

(Yes I realize that's the SRT)

For the money?  Me?  I'd take the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe....(with the turbo)

I think you underestimate just how common the Mustang is in southern Oregon.  And I also didn't mean it in the literal sense, of which sells the most.  The Mustang just feels a little less "special," a little less "unique," than the Challenger does to me, and a 'Stang facelift will not change that.

But the question the original poster posed was not "what sub-US$30k four-seat RWD coupe would you buy."  The question was "I was wondering what would be your pick out of the three."  The thread title is "Camaro vs. Challenger vs. Mustang."  So which of those three would you choose?

^^^^None.  (And I don't make it out to Oregon much so you can imagine I have little clue of how many Mustangs are thee.  But there Camaro and Challengers should give it a run for the money numbers wise...)

Good enough for me - I'd be driving it on public streets and not on closed courses  ;)

Mustang GT. Though common, I still like the look and it's significantly lighter than the other two. Roush can sort out the handling very nicely. Performance wise, 5.0 secs to 60 and 13.6 in the quarter are in the ball park. Much more performance is simply a blower away.

If you compare the V6 models performance, the Camaro leads the way.
IIRC one of the online magazines was saying that the Challanger V6 took 8.1 sec. to 60 mph  :o ???. Hell, my 4WD SUV takes 8.2 sec to 60 mph .... It is also lighter too... Chrysler lost me there .....
I drove and sit in a 2005 or 2006 V6 Mustang and I wasn't impressed with its acceleration or interior.
Camaro V6 seems to have the right powertrain ....

I agree 100% with Mitlov.  The Camaro makes a lot more sense, but it's just kind of blah.  The Challenger is just gorgeous, and it would get my nod, as well...

V6 mustang is pretty quick:

Fitted with the five-speed manual, this Mustang posts an astounding 6.5-second dash to 60 mph, and even the automatic is only four 10ths behind.

The quarter took 15.3 which isn't bad really.

The Mustang GT (at present) is both lighter and smaller in all dimensions from both the Camaro and the Challenger. The Challenger, particularily, is a large car!!

I have had a new Mustang GT and would likely buy it again over both the others. I will not be doing any of these however. Both the new ones will sell to Camaro and Challenger enthusiasts, but I doubt they will sell that well to the general public - too many other choices once you take the "nostalgia" factor out.

Mustang GT.  Prefer a convertible.

Two years ago, my wife rented one for me for the weekend.  It was a blast.
My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.
