Toronto?  Where's that?  :) I regret voting for Miller.  Fracking @sshole.  He won't clean house and cut the size of city council which clearly needs doing.

Toronto should've kept John Tory as mayor for his administrative qualities. (His ideology is a different matter).

"kept"  is wrong Umro. He never was mayor.

Wetson.    You elect socialists, you get stupid taxes. The land transfer tax being a splendid example.   If he needed more money he should start by doing one or more of the following:

Green P parking should cost MORE than a TTC ticket.
Raise the general property tax to perhaps the same levels as Mississauga/Richmond Hill etc.
Tax the land churches stand on as if they were commercial buildings.
Open up all city contracts to the cheapest bidder.
Toll the DVP southbound in the mornings
Toll the Gardiner east bound in the mornings

i think we moved out just in time.

I meant, elect him while we had the chance. He can't downgrade from provincial politics now.

It already does in most places

Raise the general property tax to perhaps the same levels as Mississauga/Richmond Hill etc.

Land values in Toronto are artifically high.  My $300k house in Toronto is valued at 150k in Miss.

Tax the land churches stand on as if they were commercial buildings.

Not fair to the chruches that have been there for decades

Open up all city contracts to the cheapest bidder.

Agree

Toll the DVP southbound in the mornings

All non 416 traffic should be charged when they use 416 hwys.  416ers should get a free pass

Toll the Gardiner east bound in the mornings

Well no, not for short stay.  trip within the city + 1 hour parking is less than TTC there and back.  I have proved this many times  for a trips I used to take. Maybe if one has a car that does only 10 mpg from a cold start...now that gas is more expensive... it was only about 90c when I did my tests.

I see what you mean   but I think a $300 k house in TO is taxed less than a $300k house in Miss and not surprisingly the VALUE of living in TO is higher.

Back in TO's  protestant past and when the churches did a lot of charitable work and the Gov did very little this was fair enough. But now the Gov has taken over most "social services" and the population is far more diverse it is probably time to become blind to religion and tax the land.  IMHO.

I was referring to a work day.  But you are right for a one hour trip green p may be cheaper.  If I am only going to run out for an hour I sure as hell am not going to take the TTC - it would take me twice as long.

When I heard this tax scheme last year.

I renewed my vehicle permit for two years last year(2007), renewal is up next year(2009). I am wondering if they'll charge me for 2008.

I did the same thing.

According to the paper today. If you did a 2 year and the 2nd year starts after Sept 1 2008 they will zap you for the $60 in Sept 2009 when you renew so you'd pay an extra $60 then.
So I wonder. What happens if you leave the province next August?   I am sure the bureaucracy will try to chase you forever to get the $ 60.

i have a better idea.   we tax all of the people visiting toronto from places like markham, mississauga, oakville, ajax etc etc   5 bucks a day.  watch the money flow!!!

Yeah, right!

It's the people from suburbs that make Toronto tick.
Ever driven the 401 or other highways into toronto from the suburbs? Or taken a GO train (when the fooker is running on time, which is only about 1% of the time!)?
Both are jammed every day.
Ever been downtown (like Adelaide and Bay or similar) in the evening or the weekend? The place is a ghost town, because all the people who work there (thereby making the economy run for the city, the Province and to some extent the country) have gone home - to the suburbs.

Go ahead, tax the people that make the place tick!
See how long you last before the place takes even a bigger nosedive.

You misspelled "suck".  Driving in the city when the 905ers are not there is a dream.  The problem is the that city has infrastructure designed for about 1M people but it supports 3M.

Well like it or not there's a lot of people living in the suburbs and working in TO, and then there's people like me who live in TO and work in the suburbs.

Many Corps have moved from the city and now have offices in the suburbs... so now 905ers have more opportunities to not make the trip to TO.

I avoid Toronto completely, except for a rare trip to the theatre, and the car show once a year.  Everything else I can get in my own town and always do.

You can keep your crappy drivers, lame city atmosphere (compared to Montreal, anyway), and so-called 'culture.'

I agree about property taxes in Toronto.  They should be raised.  They are artificially low and not on par with 905.  To all the bleeding hearts out there that say it will force people out of their homes... TOUGH.  If you can't afford to pay the taxes on your home then you should downsize or not own a home.  Period.

PS> I got my plate renewal today.... 74 for one year PLUS 60.  What a crock of SH^T.

Check this out for comparison: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

$134 a year is still relatively dirt cheap.
