Get a used 2006 Sonata I4 from the US for around $8K or so - should be able to sell for similar dollar value in 18 months in Canada.  Very reliable and safe.  You can alternatively buy a 09 GLS for about $16K US and probably sell at a profit in 18 months.  You would have to finance out of your pocket upfront, though (LOC, home equity loan).
