Seems to me that some cars become collectible without becoming worth a lot of money... in that they draw an enthusiast group that dedicates its time to collecting, maintaining, and restoring.  Also, it is sometimes quirkiness or even absurdity as much as engineering or innovation that later draws people to them.  That's what makes future collectibility so unpredictable.

I'm thinking the Aztek  ;D

Recent Pontiac GTO?

Mid 1990s Impala SS?

I agree that the Charger "500" SRT has a great chance of becoming a future collectable.

I gave this some more thought today, and have ended up somewhere in the same territory as Scaerio... the cars that end up being emblematic of their age and thus valued for nostalgic reasons are the ones that lots of people actually owned.  While the thought grills my liver, it wouldn't surprise me if there were going to be Echo or maybe even Matrix fan clubs in the 2030s.  Not the Fit, I don't think.  There must be some SUVs that capture the mood of the age too.

Other cars I'm noticing that people are now carefully sustaining well past their natural life spans include some of the early minivans (when they were mini) and some of those old Nissan Axxess vehicles.

E30 and E36 M3s. There were also a bunch of homologation special editions of each.

Early M5s will probably also be pretty attractive to collectors.

I think so too.  So I would expect that cars like the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique to be on the list, especially if they have some of the hard to get options, like the 4 wheel disc brakes, traction control, 5 spd manual, or the SVT trim.

How about a Thunderbird Super Coupe? Ford stopped making them at the end of the 1995 model year.

Those 230 hp 5 speeds are  becoming a rare item in the classifieds and the Auto Trader.

Corvette ZR1... most powerful and best handling vette ever built up till today.

Maybe the e46 M3s.. iconic cars when they came out. Nothing used to do what they did.

The trick is find a car that people will remember.  It doesn't always have to be rare or expensive.  The Mustang was cheap and they sold many.  Here is my nomination and I really think it will be:

Acura Integra 1995-2000

I have never talked to anyone who owned one and didn't love it.

(1)  The GTO was the last muscle car to resist the retro trend.  And while retro means good sales, nobody 30 years down the line is going to enjoy a car design that is, in itself, a copy of something else.

(2)  The GTO was mind-blowingly fast.  400 hp stock, IIRC, when the slightly-newer Mustang GT put out about 300.

(3)  The GTO could handle.  Almost unheard of in muscle cars before it, and still rare.  I suspect a 2010 Camaro could outhandle it, but I'm not so sure about a Challenger, and a Mustang wouldn't stand a chance.

(4)  It's rare, which is itself rare amongst muscle cars.

So yes, I think there's a possibility that the GTO, while it was a sales failure, could eventually grow into a cult classic.

Well a cult classic doesn't mean collectible.  A cult car is one that is loved by a few die-hard.  A collectible is a car loved by most any auto enthusiast.  I think the Supra is also an example of this....Though I don't think they're going to be a collectible either..
