Tomorrow's Collector Cars
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:44:11 am »
Inspired by the thread on the new Dodge Challenger and the belief by one member that the '08s will be destined for collector car greatness, I wonder what others think will be big ticket collector items in 2030?

Surely the classic greats (E-type Jags; Gullwing 300 SL's; Ferrari GTO's; even some of the best of the muscle-car era) will continue to be desirable machines for the very rich, but what more common vehicles that have been fairly available to us, might be worth big bucks in the future?

Given that a collector car really needs to either be historically significant (ie. fastest, most luxurious, best of... ??) or stir up some emotion or nostalgia in the buyer, I'd suggest the following would be great candidates for pretty decent bucks in 25 - 30 years from now as the Gen Xers and Gen Y folks have all the inheritance from the Baby Boomers to spend on frivolous automotive purchases...

1)  1996 Toyota Supra Turbo -- in original, non-modded condition.  Right when the Supra had its heyday here, no?

2)  1995 Acura NSX-T -- first year for the more attractive wheels and the targa roof.  Also had the larger 3.2L engine then too, didn't it?

3)  GM EV-1 -- the first of the electric cars -- though they were only leased out, weren't they?  Could be an extremely rare machine and very valuable to collectors.

4)  Honda Insight -- again, being the first real application of the Hybrid format for mass consumption in N.America could make it a pretty neat find in original condition

5)  2008 BMW M-Coupe -- the last year for this car -- great performance, but very rare, could make it an interesting find later on.

I suspect the current generation of Porsche 911 GT2 and GT3 RS (not to mention Carerra GTs) will be hot collectibles in the future, as well as the BMW Z8, but these are all out of reach for most mere mortals.

What do you think?

Ooh... the CRX Si (Special Edition, to make it even more rare) would be a good choice.  The RX7 is also a great one.

Ghost, I just read last week that because the new Z4 is coming out soon, the coupe is being canned.

TPL, I guess that makes an EV1 even more collectible and rare, doesn't it?  :)

Not quite.  I just happened to catch the last half of "Who killed the Electric Car" on TV a few nights ago.  From the Wiki:

GM donated around 40 returned EV1s to colleges and universities for engineering students, and to several museums including the Smithsonian Institution.

The documentary found one of those among a very nice collection of older cars.  Apparently GM insisted on rendering it unusable first.

1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 Spyder (hardtop) convertible.  320 HP, Twin turbos, AWD, roofless.  Only 877 made.  They are holding their value VERY very well.

Rav4 EV might be on the list, as any other fully electric vehicle, since pretty much all the maintenance they will need is new tires and batteries.  :P That is all a great news for my DIY e-bike, gotta save all papers for it.
Seriously Tesla Roadster tomorrow may be what 427 Shelby Cobra is today.

I agree, but I also think a stock 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, will be (less of) one too. Rare because it was expensive and wasn't very popular but by far they best looking one, even though it had a uglier spoiler.

I also think a Fifth generation Celica All-Trac will be one too, it made a pretty girly car acceptable to drive.

Future collectors:

McLaren F1

Various limited run large dollar Ferrari models

Racing Pedigree 911s (GT2/3)

Limited run cars like Koenigsegg, and so on.

Some cars might hold their value well (like the Mitsu GT VR4) but as for fetching big bucks 30 years from now, not likely.  Not impossible, but not likely.  Most cars that are affordable today are made in large volumes and are not really all that special.  People thought that the AMG Mercedes models would appreciate, but they certainly did not.  Volumes were too high and in terms of performance, style, etc, they just weren't that special.

Now, it might happen for some cars.  Maybe.  No one foresaw the sudden interest in the older muscle cars and the outrageous prices some would be willing to pay.  This might happen with cars like the Supra, but the odds are not really worth socking one away.

I agree.  Not many, if any,  modern cars will be a good investment.  Some cars (like my Supra) will maintain a certain price point it seems...just like NSXs do.  But to actually be collectible to the point where you could make any money on it?  I doubt it...Though I do hear mint 1st year Vipers with the side pipes MAY someday be worth money..

It's actually quite easy to determine what makes a good collector's car by visiting Jay Leno's garage.

But at the end of the day, only you can decide whether an old clunker is worth it by paying for it. I do not consider any Japanese cars to be collector status. They are like the latest digital SLR....

At least a couple have since been made operational again, although GM is not at all pleased with that development.  WKTEC is a fascinating movie, though.  :)

I think the Miata is a future collectible.  Not a big dollar one, but akin to what the MG Midget and MGB are today...
