Auto Tech: Gasoline
« on: August 20, 2008, 12:43:20 am »
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/gasoline.htm

I found this article an interesting read. In my driving experience, 20 years, lotsa different cars, with different brand of gasoline, and I can honestly say I didn't notice much difference. The weather played a much bigger factor, in terms of mileage, engine operation mood, power output, etc.

I buy Sunoco when prices are more or less equal.  They are the only company that goes to the effort to supply 94 octane.

In contrast I avoid Esso.  They sued to get their multi billion fine overturned after the heat died down over the Valdez oil spill.  Most recipients of the award never received a cent.  Many are now dead.  However, I do buy their Group 4 oil

Yep..All I buy is 94 Sunoco for the Supra.  I have yet to win a thing with my Sunoco Performance Points card.  Though Import Queen has won $20 in gas a couple of times.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

My local station is Esso.    I have RFIDs for shell and esso and so use their gas 90%.  Best local car wash is Sunoco so thats the other 10%.   Never use PetroCanada on principle.  We have lots of Pioneer and Olco stations around here... I wonder if they have the "bottom-tier" gas as they are always cheaper

Used to use Sunoco 94 all the time in chipped A4.  If I were to chip the GTI then it would be Sunoco 94 all the time.

Why is that?

I use the local Sunoco, Ultramar and Pioneer stations.  It depends on the price and which station I'm closest to when I check the fuel gauge.

Why is that?

I still associate it ( rightly or wrongly) with being an arm of Government, the NEP and the Liberal party.

Irrational?  maybe .  But I also don't buy beer from the Brewers Retail and would rather not buy wine from the LCBO and would not if real private enterprise stores were allowed to exist. ( Note that I do not have any problem with heavy taxation of beverage alcohol)

90% of the time I use Shell, based on: station proximity, Formula 1 sponsorship, having their EasyPay tag, their gas being Top Tier and I find the stations neat and clean.

Petro Can and Sunoco are the backups.  I try to avoid Esso at nearly all costs based on how filthy their gas is (or perhap was when it had nearly quadruple the sulfur of other brands a few years ago).

Here in southern NB, I use about 45% Irving and Esso, and maybe 10% PetroCanada when I'm desperate.

If the station doesn't have pay-at-the-pump, I don't use it.

Since all of the gas here comes out of the same refinery, the only difference is the additives that are mixed in when it's loaded into trucks to be delivered.

My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

No particular preference, but I try to avoid Esso. Its not part of top-tier gasoline consortium.

I use Petro Points to buy Amazon.ca gift certificates.

Reading Jim's article this week, I can't help but wonder whether the article was sponsored by Shell... ::)

I feel exactly the same way and avoid PetroCanada as well.

I worked for Imperial Oil for 7 years...and when I bailed I just stopped buying from there out of principle.  (Still have the stock they gave me though...and it's done fantastically well without me working for the company...hmmm...)

I like the PetroCan just because of their awesome Glide carwash...Petropoints...and their deal with the ETR that gives me some coin off of the posted fuel rate.

I use PetroCanada as it is convenient on my route most traveled.   I used to use Esso when it was convenient at my old residence.  I stopped using Esso after moving and hearing the report on the sulfur content of their gas.

Esso used to have the worst sulphur content but back in 2003 they were one of the first to reduce it to under 20-25 ppm.  Either way I used to use Sunoco, then went to esso and now use shell because of their no ethanol vpower.  My mileage has improved a solid 25km a tank if not slightly more :D

Edit - Sunoco 94 consistantly time after time gives me the worst gas mileage.  From Shell to Sunoco it's a good 40-50 km a tank difference, with these prices Í haven't filled up with sunoco for a long time.
