Maybe GM will come up with a package deal when the new Volt comes out in 2010 or 2011.......buy a Volt,get an '08 leftover Silverado for free!

I find the exterior very plain looking compared to most other trucks out there.

I would think that is GOOD. Surely a work truck should be as simple as possible with the minimum number of doo-dads and the simplest painted or black rubber trim.

Not to say that that there should not be a fancy variant available.

Yesterday I had a 400 km round trip to a job, will be back there on Thursday, left before 6 am, back home at 6:30 pm

My last truck had the 4.8l , the truck I have now has the 5.3
I find the 5.3 cheaper to run, since on the hiway with the 4.8 the tranny would kick down to 3rd a lot and with the 5.3 it stays in 4th.
At 110 km/hr, the rpm is usually at the 2000 mark

This truck is no ever load up, no leather,sunroof or 12 way power seats

For sure you want a truck that INSIDE is quiet, comfortable, good seats, good sound, good a/c.
but OUTSIDE, surely simplicity, minimum bits to fall off/go rusty/ whatever is good.

The 5.3's fuel consumption ratings are actually a little better than the 4.8's, I believe.

Gee, only $45,000 plus tax. I wonder what the depreciation is on this monster? Work truck, who are you kidding? 16.6 l /100km? That is $22 to go 100 km.

For the four days a year anyone would actually need at truck, you can rent. For $45k, I can have a loaded Accord and $15k left over to buy a three year old Silverado.

Some people use their trucks more than you would. Let's see I bought my truck in June. I have used it for Truck things at least 20 times since.

Perhaps, but for the amount it would have cost you to rent a truck that 20 times, you have already lost in depreciation. And perhaps you could have combined a few trips, too.

I don't think so. First of all you can't easily rent a truck for towing (usually that is forbidden) and second there is the cost of convience. I would have to rent a truck the night before, drive to the rental place before they close, pick up the truck and drive home. Then use it the following day for towing and return. So each use turns into a 3 day rental.

Tell airbalancer he should rent a truck, he uses his everyday for work. Some people need trucks and use them. We don't all live downtown Vancouver.

Most trucks are not used for work but anyone who wants one, feel free. However, I would prefer my $50k be used to make me money. But to each his own. I have nothing to prove to anybody. Towing? I don't need to tow anything. If I need boat, I rent one, if I need place to sleep, a 5 star hotel is a bargain compared to an RV. But our culture is based on status and consumption and that is very important to most people.

It won't last much longer anyway. North America is now the only place in the world where the average Joe can drive a 5 litre V-8 truck to work. Even here those days are on the wane.

I travel abroad at least twice a year and I work 5 hours a day. Slaving to make payments on a object is something I have never been interested in. Correction: anything I make a payment on is going to make me money, not cost me. The whole idea is to get people to pay you, not the other way around.

But for other people, full yer boots.

There ya go. So you travel abroad. Let's say that costs you $5000 a year.

I race my car -- that doesn't cost me $5000 a year, not even if I include the depreciation on my truck. And I have fun doing it.

Some people use objects to have fun, others just go places. I actually am the opposite of you, when I spend big money I like to see a return. At the end of the year if you don't want to travel anymore you stop and you now have nothing to show for it except memories and photos. If I decide to stop racing I can sell my car and truck and trailer, I then have money and photos and memories. Hey that makes it sound more sane now

Most vehicles are not used for their intended purpose either so what is your point exactly? Everyday I see cars with only one person that can seat 4 or 5. Maybe those people should rent also?

Its good to see CTC having different review of different vehicles on here....not everybody wants/needs a truck but for those that do, here is a review. If you have NO interest in it, move along to another thread then.

And for the record, you buying a $50K car when a $20K can do everything it will also doesn't make any sense.

Hey, anybody who wants to spend $50k on a vehicle is more than welcome to in my opinion. I have chosen to invest my excess income in places that make me money rather than places that cost me. But to each his own.

An Accord in Canada ranges from $25,090 to $37,790. Click every box and you will indeed hit $50k. You could spend more but you could also spend more than $45k in a Silverado. Playing on GM's website I got a 1500 Silverado up to $59,000.

I have noted that many of my employees drive trucks and SUVs. They seem to get a lot of satisfaction out of them, too. Certainly the payments keep them at work.
