The $100 tankful is old news to us but....
« on: August 06, 2008, 09:10:05 am »
18% of new vehicles sold in U.S. cost over $100 to fill up
Posted: August 05, 2008, 2:07 PM by Nicolas Van Praet

With gasoline prices in the United States now averaging US$4.06 per gallon nationwide, there are 60 separate new vehicle models whose owners will pay US$100 or more for a fill-up, according to a new analysis by consumer research firm Edmunds.com. That's 18% of the new models sold.

The firm also calculates that the median U.S. household is spending 11.5% of its income on gasoline expenses, up from 4.6% five years ago. "Gas prices are rising much faster than household incomes," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst at Edmunds. "The result is a difficult situation in which consumers must alter their driving habits or make other sacrifices in their lives."

"The $100 gas tank is a daunting psychological barrier for many consumers," said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for Edmunds. "Even drivers who need their big trucks and SUVs may start to reconsider their purchase decision once the gas pump reaches that horrifying $100 number."

I haven't had a $100 fillup yet, but have had a couple in the $90s. Depends how far I am willing to gamble on having enough gas, and I tend to fill up once below 1/4 on the guage.

70Litres.

In the BMW, if I were bone dry, 70L at $1.56 for premium 94 Chevron would be $109 plus GST.

Humph...

With a 128 liter capacity, I've been paying way more than $100 for a fill for a while. Last fill-up was $166 (5 weeks ago, though, because I ride my bike almost everywhere).

I'm thinking that by next summer I'll be looking at $200 fills.

No need.  I understand that some people actually fill up when they get to 1/4 tank down just so they don't have to spend so much.   :P  (Thing is ............... 4 times 1/4 tank is still a full tank and it'll still cost over a 100 bucks per tank.)   ;)   That's way better "marketing".   :-X

My truck was at half tank to-day when I filled it up with Premium fuel. It cost me $73.65 for just under half a tank of fuel. I have been driving the cars mostly lately due to cost of fuel.  :)

The Mini takes around $73 to fill-up, granted it lasts 620km, but still to think a car that's so small takes so much fuel.  Heck even my Civic costs me $50 or so to fill up. What happend to the good old days when a Civic use to cost $20 or so to fill up!

Both cars have a 50L tank.  The big difference, I believe, is that even the base Mini requires premium fuel.  If you are near empty, at today's prices for regular fuel (at nearly a buck.20), it should cost you well over $50.00 to fill a Civic.

Yes, you're exactly correct. The mini (even the non-S, like ours') needs 91 octane.

I don't think one buys the Mini for it's fuel economy anyway. If it gets "decent" fuel economy, that's a bonus to me.
