Honda has lifted the lid on its replacement for the S2000! The small two-seater makes its world debut as a concept at the British Motor Show, and features the latest hybrid technology.

It joins the CR-Z hybrid and FC-X Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle on the stand at ExCeL.

The car has a flowing design that doesn’t only look good, but is highly aerodynamic – in turn boosting performance and cutting CO2 emissions.

It also fits the ‘clean and dynamic’ brief that Honda applied to the project. The headlights are integrated into the front end and sweep up to look like part of the body.

This theme continues inside, with long curves from door to door that frame the dashboard instruments. The dash layout resembles that of the Civic hatchback, with important instruments in the driver’s line of sight, while the seats and doors are trimmed in blue and white leather.

To highlight the new car’s sporting intentions, the lever for the semi-sequential transmission is placed close to the driver on the dashboard, and there are paddleshifters mounted on the steering wheel, too. A starter button sits on top of the shifter.

The model would slot into the range beside the CR-Z small sports hybrid, which is confirmed for dealers.

What’s more, the show car fuels speculation regarding a production version of the long-awaited replacement for the S2000. The roadster is the last remaining rear-wheel-drive model in the Honda line-up, but a roadgoing version of the concept would drop that layout in favour of front-wheel drive.

Well, it looks fantastic.  But inane hybrid drivetrain + paddle shifters + FWD = epic fail.  How can they call it a successor to the S2000 when it shares nothing with the real thing?

If the production version really looks like what they've described, I'd be buying a Miata long before an "S2000".

FWD != S2000

That looks like a Del Sol Civic IMO.

I agree... no RWD = not a true roadster.

Yet another FAIL for Honda/Acura. :(

F2000 might be a more appropriate name then.

But what if you drive it in reverse?
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

Paddle-shift, FWD =  :thumbdown: :thumbdown:

Looks =  :hurl:

I bet it's even got a folding hardtop. This is the car for those who've been lining up none-deep for a Civic convertible.

They have turned it into a baby Audi TT, a totally different concept.

Probably will outsell the current version by about a million percent, but I'm guessing the resale value of the current S2000 just jumped considerably.

What's up with the Honda styling department lately? The Accord, the Pilot, the Ridgeline 'freshening', this thing....

I thought that was just a concept rather than the actual replacement?

Usually, I find you guys too critical, not this time! You were being kind.  Honda give your head a shake, going down the ugly path and gaining momentum.

Rumours about the "next" S2000 and rumours about the "last" S2000 have been circulating for years and so far, each and every one of those have turned out to be a gross exaggeration or entirely FALSE!  Wing, you know as well as I do about such things and both of us have seen these on the S2000 forums since the first year it came out.  We shouldn't so quickly forget that auto journal article that came out a couple years ago that was floating around the European circuit about this big HP S2000 with a V6 in it, accompanied by some very good photoshopping.  Remember how that got started?  It was a hoax perpetrated by an S2000 owner on S2Ki.  The "perp" even made a full confession months after the magazines got a hold of it.  Those European mags picked up on this information and ran with it like it was gospel.  Man, did they feel stupid when the confession came out.  Auto journalists are always jumping on that next big "scoop" even if they have to exaggerate on irrelevent info or fabricate stuff to spice things up.
I think you and I have both taken this sort of thing as pure speculation by some over zealous car mag reporter.  I would have great doubts about this being the next S2000.  How about we wait till it actually hits the showroom?  I believe we'll find that "Auto Express" will feel just as stupid once the real "next" S2000 arrives.  If the car depicted in those pictures does come out, I highly doubt that "S2000" will appear anywhere on it.

For the sake of the S2000 pedigree, I hope you're right. This is one driving machine that shouldnt be messed with in terms of character.

On S2KCA.com today, a blog was posted indicating that this car is only known as the "OSM Concept".  "S2000" is not associated with this car.

The recipe for the next “S2000” should be the following:
1.   Roadster
2.   Rear-Wheel Drive
3.   Front engine
4.   Bigger engine, a 3.0L or 3.5L V6
5.   Lower Price then the current car (if possible mid to high 30s). I think what hurt the S2000 is its high price, $48,000 CAD way too much, IMHO!
6.          No paddle, flappy shifters. Keep that current, amazing, transmission.

The only part I don't agree with is #4.  The super high rpm four cylinder is so different than anything else.  Everyone has 3.5L V-6's and they're almost boring.  Keep the weight down, keep the engine a screamer, and make mine black over red, please...

I would disagree about the bigger and therefore heavier engine.  How about a turbo option as well as the current engine and leave everything else the same.  Maybe even drop the non- turbo engine size to 1.8 litres but have LOTS of boost on the turbo variant to get about 200 bhp/litre   and of course  > 100 hhp/litre from the small engine.

Quite right  Colin is the man so maybe some carbon fibre/titanium/magnesium parts as well

I read a while back that Honda was planning to use the K20 (out of the Civic Si) in a RWD configuration for the S2000.  That engine, plus a turbo version as an option, would be perfect - it already puts out more power than the base Miata or Solstice/Sky, and a turbocharged version already exists in the RDX.  Tune that engine for a little more power, and Honda could easily trump the Miata and Solstice...
