Are these figures correct?
« on: July 19, 2008, 02:19:23 pm »
Are these figures correct. I have even check GM website in the US for the chevy colbalt. 25 City and 36 Highway. Chevy Aveo is 24 City and 34 highway. But according to the ad the cars do better. Even beating Toyotas and Hondas in terms of fuel  economy. So is this ad correct?

Maybe they're using imperial gallons?

Still seems like a big stretch of the imagination though.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

That is a Canadian ad, and the MPG's are Imperial gallons, and only highway MPG.  One good reason why we should stick with L/100km's...

:iagree:  The big giveaway is the "Buick Allure."  It's called a Buick LaCrosse in the United States.  But apparently that's slang for self-pleasure in Quebec, or something like that, and they had to rename it for Canada.

So if that is true. Why don't GM America. use Imperial gallons on their website. Sounds a lot better. Can you imagine what a Civic does on a Imperial gallon. I think these number on the ad can't be right.

Because we don't use imperial gallons here in the States, and they'd probably get sued for false advertising for using imperial gallons for their "miles to the gallon" figure.

Why do you keep saying "if" this is a Canadian ad?  As I said before, they're selling a Buick Allure.  We don't have Buick Allures in the States.  That's a Canada-specific name for the car.  The ad is OBVIOUSLY Canadian.

A Honda dealer uses km/gal in a radio add, also has it on sign around the dealership
For the Civic it is 80

I was just hypothesizing. I thought Ameicans use imperial gallons. Anyway at end of the day the ad is misleading. I can't believe they can advertise like this in Canada.  ::)

There are "imperial" gallons and "US" gallons.  You thought that The US used the former, not the latter?

Why is the ad deceiving?  While L/100km is the most common way of expressing fuel economy in Canada, I've seen several people on this forum using miles per imperial gallon.  Not sure if I've ever seen someone use miles per US gallon.

Because It is not clear that they are using Imperial gallons. I think most people who look at that ad. Will think that the cars do better gas mileage than they  actually do. The Domestics are the worst when comes to gas mileage. Which is why they use those figures.  Who to say what they intention are. I can only speculate.

If you were to go to natural resources Canada and check the fuel consumption figures you will find that the domestics are actually get very good mileage
from The NRC site for the Aveo
Make/Model     Class     Eng Size/
                                     # Cyl    Trans #gears    Fuel    Consumption    Rank    CO2 kg per year
                                                                        Type    $/yr    L/yr    mi./gal.    Class    All

For Comparison the Honda civics

 And the Mazda 3

Make/Model  Class     Eng Size/
                               # Cyl        Trans #gears    Fuel    Consumption    Rank    CO2 kg per year
                                            Type            $/yr            L/yr    mi./gal.    Class    All
City    Hwy
MAZDA MAZDA 3    C    2.0 / 4    M5+    X    $1332    1480    34    46    10    39    3552
MAZDA MAZDA 3    C    2.0 / 4    S4+    X    $1422    1580    31    44    22    78    3792
MAZDA MAZDA 3    C    2.3 / 4    M5+    X    $1458    1620    31    42    25    93    3888
MAZDA MAZDA 3    C    2.3 / 4    S5+    X    $1494    1660    30    41    32    117    3984

Based on the Government Testing the domestics are not as good as the Civic, but better then the mazda 3's on a consumption basis.

Because It is not clear that they are using Imperial gallons. I think most people who look at that ad. Will think that the cars do better gas mileage than they  actually do. The Domestics are the worst when comes to gas mileage. Which is why they use those figures.  Who to say what they intention are. I can only speculate.

I don't see how the add can be considered deceiving as the info is in agreement with the government published data. It has always been accepted by people of my generation that if you see a mileage published in a Canadian paper that it be in imperial unless it Clearly states US MPG They could also advertise the Impala As getting 40 MPG as that is the Highway mileage for one Impala Model. While the domestics have a Lot of things they need to improve ( I wouldn't own an Aveo if you gave it to me) Clearly fuel consumption is one area where they are making great improvement over a decade ago. When the Ford Focus gets a rating of 50 MPG while the Niisan versa gets a 47 mpg highway rating,(*Again from the NRC) then its time for you to reconsider such a sweeping statement as "The Domestics are the worst when comes to gas mileage"

Isn't the Imperial gallon the same as a UK gallon then?  If so even I'm amazed at some of those MPG's?!?

US Gallon = 3.8l
UK Gallon = 4.5l (both approx)

I thought when people on here quote MPG they normally use Imperial, or the resulting MPG would be much lower?

Yes, people should be using the Imperial gallon,( Canadian site)  but I guess it would be better if we all just use L/100km

They are correct. Toyota and Honda have been manipulating their epa esimates for a long time. NOW THE TRUTH COMES OUT!!!!
