Magna unit to build Porsche Boxster, Cayman
« on: June 26, 2008, 06:34:02 pm »
I thought that Porsche assembled it's own cars - wrong!  Apparently the Boxter has assembly contracted out currently, but I have never heard anything unusual about their quality to date.  This might be the beginning of a trend for low volume vehicles.

If one reads carefully,

Quote
From 2012 onwards, production of mid-engine Boxster roadsters and Cayman coupes which exceeds the capacity of Porsche's own Zuffenhausen factory will be done at Magna Steyr's plant in Graz, Austria.

What is Magna building now?  I seem to remember it is a BMW product, maybe one that is being moved to the USA ?

I believe they contract out the X3 to Magna.

I don't think it's the beginning of a trend, it's been going on for years...

We do the same thing in the microelectronics industry.   Someone else designs the chips and contract us to build them to their specs.   In Porsche's case, it is probably cheaper than building new plants for the extra production capacity.   It is a variable cost to the company versus a fixed cost.

Less employee headaches ... buying out contracts from a service provider is much easier than to negotiate with 'staff'.

^^ Exactly.  Massive fixed costs in building a new plant or expansion.  I was interested to note when reading the Wikipedia bit on the Porsche Panamera that they've expanded and built new work space for it, though...  sounds like they expect it to be a big hit.  :)

So by buying a Cayman, not only do I buy a "fuel efficient" vehicle...I'm shopping Canadian!!

Not sure this gets me all the way to justify the costs...
