Too bad the SE and SXT don't seem to be available with a manual transmission.  >:(  The pricing seems very aggressive, and I think the car is much more impressive overall than the Mustang.

Good pricing, pretty much right inline with the Mustang (R/T = GT, V6s shouldn't be offered in these cars :P)

And I agree Demo, a more impressive package than the Stang.  However, this is really a next generation car compared to the Mustang.  The current mustang has been around since the '05 model year and a new one is planned for '10.

So really, the question is: why did Dodge and GM take 4 years to get to market and allow Ford to sell roughly a kajillion mustangs in that time period?

I saw two trucks carrying Challengers on the highway the other day. From the outside the Challenger looks really sweet! :) There was a SRT on each rig and if I could afford the insurance that would be one sweet (and fast) ride. An RT with the "Trac Pac" would be a great streetable package as well.

Jeesh, just when modern muscle is so readily available high gas prices come in to crash the party. I hope Chrysler has some sweet FWD packages coming to compete with Camry/Accord/Malibu and that they might have a sub compact to compete with Yaris/Fit/Versa/Aveo etc. For that matter as capable as the Caliber is it is pretty thirsty compared to Corolla/Civic etc.

Typical Chrylser though. Killer styling! :o

The insurance on an SRT would cost me $1,412.  That includes a $200 deductible, $5M Third Party Liability, New Car Protection and the $99 registration fee.  Not too bad, I'd say.

With the ever increasing price of fuel, I'd get one with the V6.

Ack! That's like putting low profile tires on a Jeep... or Walmart allseason tires on a Porsche!  ;)

I hear what you're saying TurboBob, but I don't think buying one of these is about 'saving gas'. Besides... compared to my Goat, the new Challenger will be a gas miser!

That's crazy! ::)

There was a SRT 300 at Cambridge/Galt Chysler in the low $30s. As for GTO I suspect that you're right. I'd bet that even the SRT would spank my Chevelle in both performance and fuel economy!

Only so many dark green 1969 Chevelles though...

Chrysler is very good about having relatively small Canadian markups on their performance cars.  If I recall correctly, the Canadian markup on the Caliber SRT4 is around $2000, whereas the markup on the MS3 is $6000 or so.  The Challenger is significantly more expensive than the Mustang here in the States, but due to Chrysler's smaller mark-up, they're the same price in Canada.  That makes the Challenger RT 6MT a smokin' good deal in my opinion.

American muscle has always had the volume sellers with smaller engines.  Mustang and Camaro always had the vast majority of buyers going off in small V-6s (small being a relative term) and this is how that new SRT can be $45K.  Without the profits from those volume selling configurations, the big power models would be $$$$.

Hahaha...of course, I know they have to sell the V6 models in these cars.  It's obviouly where they make their dough selling such a massive volume (although I thought I read in Canada they actually sold close to as many mustang GTs???...at least one year...)

Maybe it's just me, but I just wouldn't want a "muscle" car with a V6.  With rising fuel prices and such, I can see the why most would avoid a V8...but I'd avoid these cars entirely if I couldn't get the V8.  These cars are all about the big engine at a good price, with a beautiful rumble from the exhaust.

I'd much rather buy something like a Civic Si than a mustang/challenger/camaro V6.

I remember that the muscle/pony cars with wimpy engines used to be called secretary specials.

IMO if someone is buying a car like the Challenger, they're doing so to a) re-capture the muscle car mystique and b) make a statement. You get neither from a smaller engined version.

Sure there will be some who go for those because they're affordable and looks good. But to anyone with any knowledge they'll be looked at in the way tpl suggested... pretenders, not contenders. Still... I won't complain if I see a bunch of these on the road... far better to look at than many other cars!

Then there is the 'will it become collectible/desirable' factor. And in that case only the cars with the larger engines and/or special packages will be able to command higher re-sale prices.

Many buyers don't care if some snob on the street corner looks down their nose at them because he doesn't think that their engine is big enough.  I don't blame them.  Come on, man, I'm sure you're a good guy, but in that last post you came off as an elitist p----.  I work with a woman who drives a 2005 Mustang V6...she loves it and isn't trying to prove anything...who are you to stick your nose in the air?

They're only a "pretender" if they put a V8 badge on a V6.  If they don't hide the fact that they're driving a V6, they're not "pretending" anything.  Just because you yourself think their car should have a different engine doesn't mean they're pretending it does.

Buying ANY car as an investment is a terrible idea.  Yes, the V6 will depreciate faster than the V8...but come on, if depreciation was on the top of your list of concerns, would you really be buying any Dodge (besides a Viper) to begin with?

So true.  There have been a lot more "small" engined "muscle" cars sold than the top of the line "tire shredders".  My daughter has an '05 Mustang V6.  She wanted the style but not the power or the gas guzzling.  Not all "muscle" cars have to be muscle cars.  You don't have to have 400 HP to have a nice car nor to have one that a lot of people want.
I agree on the point of having to make a profit on the whole model line.  If all they did was make the high end SRT models, pricing structure would have to be "adjusted".

Agreed.  Unless you've got an original Viper that you hermetically sealed in a vault from day ONE and never drove it, it will be a very long time yet before you could sell a Viper and get a return on it that could be considered an "investment".

There is nothing really wrong with driving a V6 mustang. It's just frustrating for us V8 drivers to see them flooding the streets :)

I'm just surprised so many people put up with the crappy interiors and build quality of a car like this when they aren't getting the 8.

Is the styling really that great?  Again, I'd take an Si....although i'd miss the RWD.
