Portable A/C Units
« on: June 13, 2008, 04:27:34 pm »
I notice that some of them have an auto evaperation system so they don't need to be emptied. However, what about the hot air which is normally blown outside? How does that part work with portable A/C units?

The hot air still has to be expelled outside. The ads for these things always tout that they can be moved from room to room but they almost never mention that the vent hose requires a window to blow the hot air out of. I bought one of these last summer and while it does a great job of cooling down my bedroom, the trade off is the noise it generates. I have to sleep with ear plugs if I use it.

I've got one for my bedroom.  And yes, it does have a big hose (similar to one you would use on a clothes dryer) to vent the heat out the window.

It does the job nicely for one room, although I would have expected better performance from a 10,000 BTU model.  I don't find mine any noisier than a regular window unit.

The upside is that when the weather turns back to comfortable, I can remove the hose instantly to get fresh air from outside.  It's a far less permanent installation.

What is on the end of the hose? Do you still need to put fiber glass in the window?

The unit will come with a plastic panel that will fit in the window. In my case, I place the panel and slide the window against it. the panel has a fitting to snap the hose into. If you are lucky the panel will fit your window. Mine is too short so I had to Mcguyver an extension with cardboard and duct tape.

Don't forget it has to be a sliding window.  Won't fit on a window with a "crank"....(what I have).  I use it on my storm door (fits perfectly).   Have to make sure to use it before it gets too warm. My large living room has cathedral ceiling and once it's warm, it's tough to cool down.

I think the one we bought from Costco last year (which works well but it's in too bog of a room) has/had a $150 off coupon in the recent coupon book. I also know Home Depot was blowing some out recently.

Your "hose," or your panel?   :D

I did the same thing.  My windows are fairly tall, and the panel was too short.

I have one as well.  It is a Sharp unit (CV-P10MX), pushing out 9500 BTU of cooling capacity.  It also dehumidifies into a built-in reservoir.

It's quiet, efficient and powerful enough to do my living and dining rooms completely (open portal between the two rooms).  With the use of one or two fans, the whole apartment stays cool.

I have a one ton unit which is a 12,000 BTU Unit on wheels as well as a central air system in the house. I use it for a special spot in the house where there is no duct work from the furnace at all and I do find it to work very well. The one I have is a Noma and its seems to run very quietly and efficient as well.  :)

All A/C unit dehumidifies, it is part of the cooling operation

I know that.  I mention it to indicate that it uses the reservoir system rather than evacuating the moisture through the exhaust hose.

I thought of getting one, but it really does not get that hot around here for any length of time
Look at NG Patio heaters now but I do not think there one large enough to keep the wife warmer ;D
