There was settling of disputes and arguments through the process of dueling.  It was probably cheaper and quicker than going through the courts.

Which is better?  Common Law or Civil Law? 

Common law leaves more room for interpretation, which in my opinion is better. 
Any time I send a file to a law firm in Quebec it costs me twice as much as Ontario, not sure what they do over there but they sure know how to charge.

Room for interpretation inevitably leads to so-called judicial activism.

Civil Law is better IMO.  That way there's more "the law is the law" rather than "the law is what you make of it".
