I would wait until people trade in the last model for the new one and save a bundle by buying a CPO one.

I think the only one I'd be able to get is the Hot Wheels version at Walmart.  ;D

By time I can afford one these new models will already be CPO'd cars.

Make mine a C4S.

The Cayman S Design Edition 1.  The 911 still does very little for me subjectively, and the engine is still in the wrong place.

Honestly, I'd still prefer a late eighties air cooled version.  Simple, overbuilt cars that last virtually forever with care.  Buy today for $20K, sell in five years for $20K.  New ones are only for the wealthy that can afford the massive depreciation.

True, but you don't have to wait twenty years to take advantage of the depreciation curve.  I'm a big fan of buying three-to-five-year-old cars.  New enough to still feel like a "nearly-new" car instead of a fixer-upper near-classic (and new enough to have a fraction of the maintenance cost of that 20-year-old car), but darned near half the price of new.

They have to look similar. If not the resale values would really fall. Can you imagine Chris Bangle (banglebutt BMW fame) having to work there and NOT change anything! Gotta be tough to make subtle changes or improvements, but not affect the overall look. That's their challenge. :)

911...love it...always have.  I heard one with perhaps a sport exhaust package...sounded awesome.

Instead of replacing my P5 (which runs fine) with a bland 4-door something, I'm taking a look at some older 911s...I stopped into Mantis in Oakville and their opinion was that these are pretty darn reliable cars.

Mid '90's vintage...65,000 km...$45,000.

IMHO, the 911 is one of, if not the most, purist evolutions of design.

I agree that the engine would appear to be in the wrong place hanging over the rear axle, but Porsche ingenuity of engineering makes this layout handle beautifully.

I cant think of another sports-car which has been around in one incarnation or another for 45 years, let alone one which has nearly as much design & Marque pedigree.

BTW, it's now featured on their website - http://www.porsche.com/canada/

??? Purity of design would not have allowed AC, navi, power everything, traction/stability control etc. They are doing what almost all sporting manufacturers have done, dumb-down and add "luxury" for the poser set. :pimp:

Early air-cooled would be my preference, but the Cayman is a pretty damn good car. When is it considered acceptable to pursue a mid-life crisis? ;D

...and yet, their relatively recent MR platform out-handles it.  Like Honda and Mini and the FF platform, Porsche has done amazing things with a platform that, on its face, should handle like a pig.  HOWEVER, when all other things are equal, cars still handle the best when the engine is between the axles.

Imagine what a Cayman would handle like if Porsche took the decades of R&D and millions (billions) of dollars it's poured into its RR platform development and spent all of that on MR cars?

That's not to say that MR is better in every way than RR.  Fitting four seats in a Cayman would be quite the trick, no?  But if you're after beautiful handling, and all other factors are equal, MR is the way to go.

Big_Thumb...

I disagree...

I don't think that the 911's purity of design has been compromised by "AC, navi, power everything, traction/stability control etc"... the things you've mention are basically modern conveniences or safety features that many of us now take for granted in much more modest modern cars.

As far as I can see, none of these things have noticeably effected the overall design integrity or undoubted credibility of this stunning  car.

It's a GT car now. The first iterations were sports cars; not many of them left actually.

For purity of design:

I disagree again...

A Merc SL, Aston DB9 & Bentley Continental etc etc are GT's... the 911 is still a sports car.

IMO the Lotus is basically a track car which is road legal, and as a road car it's way to harsh a ride and "stripped" for everyday use.

You've obviously had a lot of experience of this then..?  ::) ::) ::)
