sofa/furniture color
« on: June 03, 2008, 01:01:11 pm »
Are there any recommended guidelines on the color of furniture one should buy based on the color of the walls or the floor.

Someone suggested furniture 2 should be 2 shades lighher than the floor.
Someone else suggested 2 shades darker than the floor.
Someone suggested contrast to the walls

Are there any websites where i can get tips on choosing furniture color given the color of the floor/walls?

Usually you bring fabric home and try and decide colour that way.  Then you order and wait 2 months.

If you have teenagers, and it's a big comfy thing, make sure it's a colour that hides stains well.

Or cover your furniture in clear plastic.  :D

I wouldn't recommend buying furniture in accordance to wall colour, because that's going to change before your furniture does (or it should).

Something neutral (like a soft brown) will go with everything (assuming your walls aren't black) and use accent colours according to your wall and floor..

I think that's the easiest way.

Think of it as a variation of choosing a car interior to go with the exterior car colour you like, and maybe you'll find it easier  ;D

But seriously, I think the main thing is to get a couch colour that you like, and a wall colour that you like, that go together reasonably well.  You don't want to be sitting on a couch that you hate just because some interior decorator says it goes with the walls.

:iagree:  Buy what you like.  Repainting is easier than changing furniture, if worst comes to worst.  FWIW, I think as long as your furniture is not the SAME colour as the floor, but is in the same range, you'll be alright.  For example, the room I'm in now has a greenish garpet, and dark green furniture.  Upstairs has light hardwood, and a light sofa...

Repainting is also cheap... even tho'  paint seems to have gotten very expensive recently.   ( I am told the price of Titanium oxide has gone through the roof and that has caused it)

I've noticed it as well.  Not good because the stuff is in everything it seems.
