Cell phone question--what does this symbol mean?

This isn't my phone, it's an image stolen off the internet with a red circle and arrow added, but I have the same symbol come up on my Razr.  It's intermittent, and it seems to me that the battery depletes quite quickly when it's there (i.e., from full to nothing in 18 hours).

I lost my manual when I moved, so I can't just look it up.  Any ideas what this means, and if it would have an effect on battery life?  Thanks.

Data being transferred up and down would be my guess.  Mine looks similar.
