I made a huge mistake two years ago selling a 2005 Astro AWD for way too cheap. Those things have some kind of cult following and the values are going up. Awful things to drive really, but so many love them.

There's a bakery around here that uses one as a delivery vehicle.  Got it a few years ago and it looks to be in great shape.

Agree, I've know a few people who just loved those things. Just don't get in an accident  :D

My FIL had one, it was an early 2000's model, and by 2009 when he got rid of it, it was downright dangerous to drive with the typical GM Astro van afflictions; sloppy rag-joint (lots of play in the steering), super bouncy dead shocks, and a failed ABS module that caused it to activate unexpectedly. I remember borrowing it to pickup a fancy new flat screen TV (it was 2008/9ish) instead of putting it in the bed of my Sonoma and immediately regretted the decision.
Aside from those issues, which are easily remedied with a bit of basic maintenance and repair, they did run forever, and were very versatile.

What does "Syncro" mean as a VW trim? I had a relative with a (manual?) Passat with this badging in the early 90s. Cool cars, those weird boxy-but-not Passats. Shame they literally don't exist anymore.

Wasn't the Syncro the AWD system?

I forgot you're just a young whipper snapper!

But yes, I believe it was the VW AWD system.

Audi came up with the cool 'Quattro' name for their AWD in 1980, would makes sense the marketers at VW of the time dreamed up something similar

Yup, Steyr-Daimler-Puch developed a  4x4 drivetrain for these.

Here's an example of one: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a39152763/1989-volkswagen-vanagon-gl-syncro-camper-bring-a-trailer-auction/
It went for $35k USD

A local company was selling the holy grail of Vanagon's. A syncro westfailia with a TDI swap, listed at $79,995, no longer advertised so must have found a home. Never understood the crazy values of these. As a kid growing up our neighbour bought a westy, early 80's model (this was around 1993 and I think theirs was before the waserboxer came out) they bought an automatic so both he and she could drive it. The first trip they made it was discovered that the thing could hardly maintain anything much above cyclists pace up the steep hills. They traded it off after a few outings.

With the supercharged G60 engine from the Corrado. They sold 300 in Canada and none in the U.S., all manuals. Neat car.
