So this one's a little weird, but I witnessed part of a high speed chase yesterday. I was driving home from a day of canoeing at Caddy Lake. I was driving down McLeod Ave - a regional collector street that is quite busy, with parked cars, plenty of pedestrians, businesses, houses, etc. I notice a black pickup truck coming towards me, pass another vehicle, which is an odd move on such a street, but okay, some people do it sometimes, especially if it's a very slow driver they're following. Then I notice the police car behind him lights and siren on, and my first thought is Oh, Man, he chose a bad time to do an illegal pass. But rather than stopping, he squeezes between me and another opposite direction driver at what must have been 80km/h, cop car in close pursuit. I keep an eye on him in my rearview mirror, and he's weaving around all the regular traffic, blows through the stop sign I just stopped at, etc. It's at that point I realize, Oh Crap, that's a high speed chase, just like I've seen on TV. I reach the stop sign to turn onto my street, and another cop car comes flying along, maybe 30s after the chase vehicle/initial cop. As I pull into my driveway and start unloading the canoe, all I can hear is sirens all through the neighbourhood.
Let me tell you, even though I had zero involvement in the chase, it's still a good way to get the adrenalin flowing.
