You are usually covered if it happens during a high-performance driving instruction of some type....this wasn't.

His best bet is to drop it off somewhere in the boonies and declare it stolen in a few days...it probably would be by then.

I wouldn't say condoning, just wondering what he's going to do.   

One of the reasons I track my Miata for fun more than the 911 is because I can afford to put it into the weeds.  Less worries, but I still stay far away from that concrete wall.

I'd say the insurance folks would figure it out pretty quick. The local track/club would be put in tough spot and would not back the owner up. To go to the track it is your risk. One reason I autox the Elantra over the Miata at times.
