Does Uhaul still have those temporary hitch you can but on a car ( they had them in the '70's)
Or buy a hitch and rent a trailer

Well, I do have some more stuff than just the criticals that I would like to keep (ie: some fans, space heater, random books, plates and such) but not big.

Dunno if I want to go to trailer route. Worried it might not have enough room, etc...

Looking for apartments in Toronto today....I'll be thinking about this again next week.

The benefit to U-Haul is your probability of ending up on W5 is good!

The drawback with U-Haul is the police and MTO may stop you and impound your truck with your stuff for being unsafe.   Happened to my friends.  Fortunately they were on their way to return the emptied truck when they were stopped by the cops and MTO.   They had to phone and wait for a ride home.  U-haul didn't send a replacement truck.

And there are plenty more. The gov't (Consumer Services) has a huge file on U-haul and it keeps getting bigger and bigger.

When my Dad moved last summer, he looked at renting a UHAUL thanks to the low prices.  NO WAY!!  They plate their trucks in the US to try to avoid safety regs and are nothing but scumbuckets that don't give a rat's arse about  whether or not you actually survive the trip.

We went with Ryder.  Plated in Canada, much newer truck, actually not much more money when it all was sorted out.

Alright...since a one-way cube/cargo van is looking to be near $1k, I think its time to look at professional movers for a consolidated move.

Should I be thinking more about the big guys (AMJ Campbell) or smaller movers? I'm leaning towards the bigger movers as I figure they're more liable to have large volume to schedule a consolidated move in the short timeframe that I need...

They go by the weight for their rate and since you don't have very much your small load could be bundled into a larger load and they would get twice as much revenue from the trip. They like it and the bigger guys would be best.

We used T-R over the years and liked them. If your new company isn't helping pay the cost (did you ask?) you can also claim some of your expenses under your taxes. If you move more than 40 km I think was the rule, you could claim.

Our resident tax experts here might be able to offer more current info for you.

They're not covering. :) Long story. But its relatively cheap so...

I have found a few of the "sketchier places" that say they can do it for $400. :o My stuff is barely worth $400 outside of the bed and the tires.

What is T-R? I googled but could not find anything.

The tax writeoff ... yup I did the same thing last year.

Keep all of your receipts, including food receipts (during the move), gas receipts and hook-ups (Hydro, Rogers, etc.).

Tippet-Richardson I believe, one of the larger moving companies.

One heads up on the movers - make sure you know the payment terms - a lot of these guys require a check in their hands before they unload the truck, or they'll keep you stuff until they get one.

Make sure you know the rules, so you don't pack your checkbook into your stuff that they won't unload.

$400?  That's pretty good, would barely cover the gas these days in a pick-up to Toronto and back to ottawa :P

I rented a U-Haul but I was moving only 5km and the guy was awesome, he got me the newest truck they had it was super mint.

I paid $300 for a 10km move in Toronto. $400 is an awesome deal from Ottawa to Toronto.  :P

It is awesome as long as they don't somehow lose my mattress out the back of the truck!

I saw a big old American car with a huge trunk moving a mattress loaded on the trunk with the trunk lid open. I should've taken a picture, I was too busy watching the marvel turn a corner without dropping the mattress, it wasn't tied.
