Via train quarantined in northern Ontario, 1 dead

Ambulances and police scrambled to the hamlet of Foleyet, Ont., on Friday after one person died and several others fell ill on a Via Rail passenger train en route from Vancouver to Toronto.

The train was under quarantine as authorities rushed to tend to those with flu-like symptoms and find out what was causing the illness.

"The whole place is being overrun with ambulances and police cars, and we've got helicopters," said Deborah DesRochers, chairwoman of the town of 380 about 100 kilometres southwest of Timmins.

"They've got the train quarantined. They're trying to isolate what it is."

Only emergency response personnel were being allowed on or off the train, which was carrying 260 passengers and 30 crewmembers.

Via Rail spokeswoman Catherine Kaloutsky confirmed one person had died but had no further details.

"Medical personnel are at the scene and are standing by to assist as may be required," Kaloutsky said.

Police said as many as 10 people were ill with flu-like symptoms when the train made its regular morning stop in Foleyet.

The illnesses appeared to be contained to two train cars.

A CN Rail sleep station had been evacuated, and local health facilities were on standby.

As everybody worries about the price of gas will disease be the next big thing to worry about.

I'd be quite nervous...what is there an outbreak of in China, foot and mouth disease or something?  And the train was from Vancouver to Toronto?  Man, I'd hate to be one of the passengers or crew or anybody who had been on the train since it left Vancouver, or any of their friends/family...can you imagine how big the potential circle of contact is already?

I sure hope they figure it out soon

An autopsy should help determine the cause.

I suspect something from the food car on board that has gone bad. I doubt its any toxic substance coming from the engines or power supply at all but probably something thats in the food that is served on board.

It was a blood clot.

I wouldn't be so funny if it was your family member. 

Its also easy to call it overreacting AFTER you know what it is. If it was something major people would be praising VIA for their efforts.

Being able to laugh at these sort of things in retrospect makes life easier, perhaps I should introduce you to sense of humor.

Considering I have hardly been on here for the last 2-3 days I find that funny. You must have me confused with somebody else that things your post stink.

Considering the facts at the time the authorities took the proper steps IMHO. Humour directed at the person who passed away and the families involved is shameful and very low class jzmtl
