Any Gym Rats Around?
« on: May 06, 2008, 06:58:29 pm »
Something I have always wanted to do is maintain my flexibility and stamina as I get older. I don't know if arobics would be the best way of doing
doing this or not but I've always been interested in that. Anyone have any recommendations? I don't know a lot about Yoga but I'm not overly interested in that.

Get a Swiss Ball and follow some of Adam Ford's routines.  I've seen very fit people and athletes struggle at first.  Very good..no, great workout, and cheap to get started too.  (I have some of his DVDs, and will burn one for you if you'd like).

Sounds pretty interesting for a cheep price. I don't mind buying them off the internet if its from a store I've heard of. I'm sure I could find them on
Ebay, any other recommendations of places to buy his products?

I got all of mine from E-bay.  I'll burn you his "Swiss Ball Basics" and you can see if you like it before springing more $$ for his other vids.  Up to you.

Oh..he has a great workout called "4 Corners" you can download for like $5.  Let me find it.

Oh, you can buy the Swiss Ball anywhere.  Most any sport place (ie. National Sports),...even CDN Tire has them.

Would you recommend his Swiss Ball specifically? Should be careful of cheep imitations?

Well...some of this thinner ones are a bit "bouncier"...but even using the bouncy ones helps train your core muscles even more.  Head over to National Sports, or your local fitness retailer and have a look around.  Check outhis website, or youtube vid on how to get the right size.

I have a quality ball, and a cheaper one..and they both get the job done.  Although the cheaper ones are more prone to puncture from sharp objects.  I think the most I ever paid for a Swiss Ball was $30, and the least was $5.99

Thanks for the suggestion. For the price of the Ball I'll give it a try for sure.

Note to self:  Always remove scissors and knives from back pockets when working out on a cheap body ball.   ;D

Swiss balls look like the birthing balls in the maternity ward where my kids were born.   ..

What do you currently do?

Personally I like things like cycling and hiking. Both are low impact and you can do them well into your....60's, 70's, 80's....ok until your dead.

I've had 60-70 year olds keeping up with me on some trails until I put it into overdrive.

Flexibility and Stamina (muscluar endurance) are two different components of fitness - both equally important to overall fitness IMO.  There are some training programs out there that will hit a bit of each but none that will train specifically flexibility and stamina to a high degree at the same time safely IMO.  I am a certified trainer and at our gym we promote indivual conditioning programs with various free-weights/bands/machines ect...combined with a carefully supervised stretching program to be done in-between and after sets.  Also, at our gym there is a qualified instructor who leads a specialized 'stretching' class.  You might look around/phone gyms in your local area to see if these are offered.

What I am discovering is a lot of the example exercises that came with the ball hurt by back which is the problem I have with pretty much anything resembling a workout. Even though I don't have back problems.

If you back always hurts doing exercises either:

1) You DO have a bad back
2) Your have a weak back OR your back isn't used to exercising.

Be sure the ball is pumped up good and firm
