Wandered thru the local Pontiac/GMC dealer's lot this afternoon and spied a white G8 GT (the V8) for asking price of $40,228 (before freight, PDI and taxes of course). That struck me as a pretty good price for this car. In the white, it looks a lot like my 535 - Pontiac even swiped the "Hofmeister Kink" on the rear doors from BMW sedans.

It's a good looking car, and at that price, seems to me to be good value.

In the land down under, large car sales are dropping off, except the V8,s.
Being a mad Holden-Ford rivalry(as you can see by our V8 supercar racing),the majority of V8,s are based on the G8 (SS here) and not a standard looking car with a v8 fitted.
The ute versions(pickups) are a big seller to and nearly all would never carry anything in the back--just have to have one type of cars.
Check out the Ford and Holden sites in aussie and also their performance off shoots.
HSV and FPV-just add the com.au
Curious the see what you guys think.

I see a price of 40g mentioned------------they are 47 here

It looks like a sweet car.  Thing is, GM's got the cojones to offer the Holden Commodore here, and Ford's made no indication of ever giving us the Falcon.  Same, because nicely-equipped Falcons could be the cornerstone of a Lincoln turnaround...

What do you expect?  Ford and GM are (mostly) lost in North America....

I don't think GM is lost from a product perspective (I'm not touching relative economic health of various brands because I'm not a shareholder and I don't give a damn).  I'm actually really liking GM at the moment.  The Astra, Malibu, CTS, Acadia, G8, and Camaro all seem really good to me.  I personally would buy an Astra over a current Civic.  I'd take a new CTS over a new (or previous) TL, and that's despite a good history with three separate Honda models.  I'd take a G8 over an Avalon or Maxima in a heartbeat.  And my wife reeeeally likes the new Vue.  And don't get me started about the next-gen 9-3.  An Astra platform, turbocharged engine, hatchback body shape, and torque-vectoring AWD will make me go crazy if I focus on it too long.

Ford's done a good job of turning around their CR reliability ratings, but nothing in their lineup makes me say "damn, that's hot."  That's a huge advantage GM has right now, I think, though I think Ford leads GM in CR reliability ratings.

Chrysler is bleeding out, and I'm not going to defend them.

EDIT:  I just realized that I did an entire "I like GM" thread without once mentioning either the Corvette or the Volt.  How about that?

:iagree: The Aus and UK versions of this car are awesome.   The G8 is OK, but I think the styling of the new UK Monaro is the best on this platform.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Punch in Coupe 60 on the old google network and see the concept Monaro.
I doubt it will ever make production now the worlds gone nuts.

I much prefer the Monaro bodywork we now get in North America ;)

The new Holden Monaro looks like the old one to me, which in turn looks like the 2004 Pontiac GTO, which buyers shunned for "looking like a Cavalier."

A good driver should be able to tell if he is about to 8000 RPM without the need for a redline altho I do admit they are handy. The cam in my truck redlines at 5500 rpm and I do watch to shift just before it goes over. Mines a 5" Monster tach that works quite well with a 8000 final line.  :)

The SAM man is digging this car!

I had a close look at Detroit last year in one and really liked the interior quality...will have to look at it closer this time.

The honkin V8 would be completely excessive for me...and likely a handful in the winter as well.

A handful in the winter?  Nah... that's what common sense (and traction control) are for.  :)

That's a heck of a positive review there SirA.  Sounds great and GM gets a big  from me for what looks to be a great car.

BUT... at an estimated starting price of $40k US, it's likely to be at least $10,000 more than the Camaro SS in Canada; and I'm not sure I need two extra doors THAT badly.  Too bad too since this could've been an easy sell to the Mrs. in terms of a good, practical family sedan.   ;D
