Filled up the car for the first time yesterday. 700kms on the tank with an eighth still on the gauge. 54L to fill, so 7.7L/100kms. Not bad for almost all city driving.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I had a Citroen DS3 with the bigger diesel over the weekend (review to come soon). Although it lacked a full board computer, based on distance/consumption I averaged a bit under 5 l/100km. That's simply astounding given I was driving mostly in the Pyrénées.

That is good. How big is the tank, 60l?

Calgary->Lennoxville->Calgary road trip in the BMW and 8.4L/100km average.  Pretty much what I was expecting.
BTW, the car was made for trips like this.  Comfortable, quiet, effortless passing when called upon. Just perfect.

So, this will be a little different: Boat Fuel Economy.

We traveled 42kms in total.  The boat has a 25L fuel tank, and I estimate that we used 1/4 of a tank, so 6.25L.  So, doing the math, I get 14.8l/100kms.  Boat is a 14' aluminum fishing boat with a 15hp 4-stroke mercury engine.  Engine was at WOT for 95% of the trip.  4 people on board.

70L according to the book. On the highway, this thing is going to have pretty fantastic range.

Very impressive mileage indeed. Why bother with a diesel?  ;D

Because 7,7 l/100km isn't all that great.

Really?  City driving for a fairly large sedan? Looks pretty good to me.  :D

Did a day trip from Toronto to Cobourg beach this past long weekend in our Tesla Model S85.
Plugged in at a charging station right off the beach, cost nothing to park, no cost to charge, and added enough range to cover 150 km of the trip!
So, we drove 250 km and paid a few dollars for the other 20 kWh in electricity we used, supplied by our home charging station the night before, at cheap overnight rates.

Yeah, actually it is. I'm getting the same city fuel consumption that the diesel is rated for (EPA 7.8L/100km for the 6 speed manual Passat TDI). Could a TDI get better fuel consumption on the same cycle? Possibly, maybe even probably in the warm months. But it wouldn't do it with the same performance, needing somewhere close to 2 seconds longer to get to 100 than the TSi's  (roughly) 7.5 seconds.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of big vehicles, but ultimately the consumption and CO² emissions level are deciding factors for me regardless of size or horsepower of the vehicle in question. I've set a maximum of 7,2 l/100km combined, 6 l/100km extra-urban, and 160 g/km CO² based on the ECE cycle effective since 2011 for any car purchase. It's a red line....if a car is in a larger class, it doesn't matter, it still has to meet that target to be considered for purchase.

Similarly, if a smaller vehicle meets the same critera, I don't care so much. For example, sure a Golf TDI is much more efficient than a GTI, but I don't really penalise the GTI/care because it does hit that target even if it's petrol.

We compromised a few years ago, we got a huge SUV that guzzled gas, and I got a Smart ED that used none.
Combined fuel economy for the distance driven by both vehicles was 5L / 100km.
It was like driving two Pruis', whereas the reality was we had two excellent cars we loved (more than a Pruis).

Traded in the SUV for a Tesla.
Now we have two electric cars, and use zero gas.

Because the diesel can get into the 4's on the highway.  I'm not saying that 7.7 is bad, it's not, especially for city.

That's ok. I can get into the 5s on the highway, but I'm also into the 7s when it comes to 0-100kph.

It's amazing how efficient the new 4-Strokes are.  My 20 hp 2-Stroke on a 16' aluminum used about 15L to cover ~30 km.

In contrast, our family boat is 24' long with a 350 V8.  Round trip to the cottage is 32 km and it uses around 75L-90L depending on speed and load.

One of my former neighbors at my old cottage has a Cigarrete style boat with big dual v8s and was telling me he spent around $6k in total last season for fuel.  I just shook my head and told him I'd have a hard time wrapping my head around burning that much even if I could afford it and he said that's nothing as one of his buddies with a 41' boat spent over $25k in fuel last season!  That's just for fuel!  :o
