447 kms on 37.8 litres. About 8.5 l per 100. Not bad for not straying far from home. Been a while since the last fill.

It's been written before, but one of the many reasons we usually rely on trip computers to report "real" fuel economy is that we have no control on who filled up before us, how and when. Different pump nozzles won't "click" at the same point. Did the other guy stop at one click, or two? Sometimes you get pumps with gag reflexes and you overfill. Or underfill. Also, no control on how much driving the other guy did between the fill-up and the drop-off, as there are multiple gas stations all around. If you fill-up at Costco and drive 15 km, you're still "full". And who knows if a fleet guy made a coffee run?

We're often capped at 400 km for weekly loans, so it's not like we run multiple tanks over seven days - unless roadtrip - to help with the data. Sometimes I get a car that's not full, so in that case I fill-it up (and get $crewed). If testing a PHEV, I fill it up after pick-up, sometimes adding barely 1$ in fuel, because they use so little I need a proper "reset" of the tank. Making that detour often plays with time, so for regular vehicles, I used to do it but don't bother anymore.

Previous pressie went 12.1 indicated, 12.5 math so tank was pretty full. The bigger the tank, the more "Full" can trick you. A truck will be full for a long time. The truck I dropped yesterday indicated 12.2, math was 13.5 - not full, or optimistic computer ?

Usually, the longer you drive the same vehicle, the more your fuel stats - both math and computer - converge towards a similar number. So my numbers-OCD self calmed down and reports what the car says - I can't control all the variables. Some guys just quote Energuide  ::)  :banghead:

^^^ Definitely.   I use an iPhone app for fuel consumption and the car logs consumption itself to Volvo On-Call app.   I try to fill at the same pump at the same Costco every time.   Over two years the iPhone app and the car are the same within 0.4 l/100km.   Close enough I think.

Drove the MX-5 to the mountains today. According to the trip computer I got 4.7L/100km. 110-120km/h for most of it. That seems a little too good. :o
You have the same engine as my Mazda 3 just with a different tune with 26 extra horses and drivetrain configuration. But your car is also a lot smaller and lighter which helps. My best full tank was 1004 km on 49.4L of gas from Calgary to Vancouver on a single tank. I supposedly got 4.7 L/100km from Kamloops to Canmore but I found that weird with an overall increase in elevation. But the average speed was 10 under the limit with heavy traffic.

Real-world fuel consumption

So I rented a u-hail car trailer and hauled my 1968 Buick Riviera from Vernon to Calgary using my 06 Chevy 3500 single wheel diesel. It averaged 15L/100km Vernon-Calgary. The riv weighs 4220 lbs. I hauled back another Buick, my 1984 Century, it weighs considerably less @ 2800 lbs. I do the Vernon-Calgary and back all the time and I always get better mileage coming back. Calgary to Vernon is definitely more downhill and I usually get at least 1-1.5L/100 km better.

This case it was not. I averaged 14.8L/100km with a 1400lb lighter car with more downhill. Maybe the diesel just doesn’t feel the extra weight? It was even about 5 degrees colder heading home. Strange.

That's insane fuel economy. My F-150 with the 4.6 would have only achieved that empty on the highway.

Did the wind switch direction?

Wind around BC/Alberta tends to be westerly, so despite the overall elevation gain going east, the wind sometimes helps.

My second best tank of gas was from Calgary (1045m) to Surrey (100m) at 4.9 L/100km My absolute best was from Kamloops (535m) to Canmore (1375m) at 4.7 L/100km.

Quick trip with the 3 to BC and back. Was thinking of making it back to Edmonton on a single tank but I was down to 2 bars with 200km left to go.  Probably would’ve done better if my ex didn’t decide to junk the under body tray.

That is really good. Remind me if you have the 2.0 or 2.5 engine.

2.0 Skyactiv engine. Car has 196,000 km on it now. For a first year engine with their brand new technology, it's been running exceptionally well. Last couple of tanks with mixed driving saw 7.2 and 7.0 L/100 km. Nothing in terms of power and fuel consumption has indicated that there is carbon build up around the valves but a physical check would be nice at some point.

The 2.5 MZR available in this generation is quite thirsty from what I heard. Bubba had one.

F150 yesterday...*

*with one hell of a tailwind behind a semi about 3-4 car lengths...suction is a wonderful thing.  ;D After I finally got around him it was at 9.3ish...wind is also a wonderful thing.  Closer to 16l/100 into the wind.  Calculated avg was 15.8l/100.

A headwind on the way there and lots of full throttle passing.

Real-world fuel consumption
« Reply #4059 on: June 29, 2021, 07:21:34 pm »
Been told diesels don’t get affected by smaller amounts of extra weight towing, I’d have to agree. Been fetching vehicles from Vancouver and driving the exact same route, same truck and trailer. Temperature with the Tahoe was +36. With the Rav it was in the low 40’s most of the trip. Was interesting seeing what was halfway up the Coq overheating (many). Even spotted a Mach E on the side of the road towing a good size tandem holiday trailer (unsure if it was broken, dead, or just resting)

Empty (just a tandem car trailer) going from Kelowna to Vancouver I averaged 14L/100km. Average speed was probably a good 10-15 K faster empty than loaded.

Came home with a 2009 Chevy Tahoe. Weight approximately 5600 lbs. Fuel mileage was 16.9L/100 km.

Next was a 2015 RAV4. Weighs about 3600 lbs. truck averaged 16.2L/100km.

These numbers were verified with refilling the tank.
