No wagon = MEGA FAILURE!

Anybody have the sales number for the wagon vs the CX-7?  I'd say the CX-7 outsold the wagon 4-1.

Probably saying 10-1 would be generous. Think only 3-6% of production was wagon (forget where I saw that).

The hatch is another story though. Popular in Canada.

It'd be nice if Mazda did go for the hatch/liftback option again even on the "US spec" model.  That was a nice distinguishing option and I see tons of those around.  Kind of a "stealthy" hatchback too because you almost wouldn't be able to tell unless you knew the distinguishing features.

So I guess that means we'll see it at $24k-38k in Canada.

If the PR is correct, it looks like the EPA hasn't changed.

272-hp 3.7L DOHC 24-valve V6 cylinder
Mileage, City/Hwy (mpg) 17/25 AT

170-hp 2.5L DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder with VVT
Mileage, City/Hwy (mpg) 21/29 MT

Considering a 60HP bump for the V6 and 14HP for the I4 I guess that is good?

I saw a new Mazda6 sedan yesterday. It looked very nice.

I was surprised to see it, I didn't realize they were out already.

EDIT: The Mazda Canada website says "The all-new Mazda6 sports sedan will launch later this year, with an expected on-sale date in late summer, 2008."

I guess the car I saw was a press car. I didn't get a look at the licence plate as it was missing the front plate.

In case you missed it, the First Drive reviews for the 2009 Mazda6 are on the home page of MT and C/D.

Much bigger!  And yet the reviews are quite positive...maybe Mazda made the right decision.

I'm sure it will help increase overall North American sales, but it won't be on my list of possible purchases anymore, even with employee pricing.

My short list of possible new car purchases (in prefered order):

2008 Jetta 2.0T/GLI
2008 TSX
2008 Legacy 2.5 Limited
2008 Mazda6 2.3 GT

For 2009, the Mazda6 is out due to the huge increase in size, the TSX would still be acceptable for size but must need a JDM front grille.

Blah, whatever, I have a demo for now and SHOULD keep saving for a future purchase.

Shouldn't 08 TSXs be getting hard to find pretty soon?
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

Even if you could find them, they might all have Navi.

It's bigger than a Camry.  I'll pass.

Then again, I'm the exception instead of the rule in the US, and this will probably sell far better than the first-generation Mazda6.

From the pics the new 6 is growing (hehe) on me. With it being 6+ inches longer than my all ready long wagon its too big for us. Of course, my next car I actually want to be smaller, not bigger and better fuel economy.

However, I can't wait to see it in the flesh and drive one. JSCC, I'll have to come visit you when they get released. Just so you know now.....I'm not buying, just coming for a joy ride.  ;D

I wonder how that V6 will feel....I can't keep my tires from spinning with my under powered version.

You can't really blame Mazda for following the trend. Most likely this is what the American consumers really want, whether you like it or not, for this segment since all other manufacturers are doing just the same - a big car. Some of the "negatives" of the previous model (justified or not) were the size and the power. Personally, I think the old Mazda6 was the perfect size for a mid-size car.
In my eyes, the new 6 has all the attributes to become the leader of the segment. The only possible negative I can think of right now is lesser fuel efficiency compared to the other V6s in the class (the I4 seems to be inline with the rest of the class or pretty close), but if you do the math, it all comes down to a few hundred bucks per year which is a rather small price to pay for the benefit of having a car you like to look at, sit in and drive every day versus a bland transportation appliance.

Its true...I'd still like Mazda to consider for next year a hatch or wagon variation on the US 6.  I think that'd make for some interesting vehicles on the road.  Lots of people are starting to reconsider the "wagon" style even if its named something else.

According to the reviews it has a better turning radius than the previous model despite being larger so the size doesn't seem to have caused a huge problem for handling in the parking lot.

I imagine the new Mazda3 will have grown a bit as well to fill in the void. As usually happens.

Edmunds has their first drive posted.

First Impressions:
With most of its major flaws fixed, the 2009 Mazda 6 is easily one of the most impressive sedans in the midsize class.

The problem with North America is that men with small dixks won’t drive a wagon.
