Heat pump problem???
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:31:51 am »
I have a new heat pump. I have never had one before so I do not know what is normal operation and what is not. I was wondering if you could tell what you think of following.

The past few weeks in the mornings it is between 8 and 11 C. While reading paper I notice the heat pump cycles on for 5 minutes and off for 5 minutes all the time. The thermostat is set at 23.5 and never flucuates from that at all. So the system does not even drop 0.5 of a degree before cycling on.

On one hand it is great how is maintains exact temperature but on the other it worries me about the frequent cycling of the pump. The installer says this is normal. I am not too convinced.
If you want more in life you have to make an effort.

Are you talking about the indoor unit fan,( that moves the air around) or the outside unit ???

Yeah I know that is high. We been told that before. Some of our friends keep their house at 18C. I cannot handled that. We are comfortable at 23.5. That is out comfort zone.......

Funny thing though that during summer I have AC set at 21 or 22C. In summer I keep my house cooler than in winter. Go figure????

I have circulating fan only come on only when heat pump is running. The heat pump cycles on and off every 5 minutes in this weather and the fan goes on and off with it. I concerned about the short and frequent cycling and it effect on compressor. These days once sun is hitting house it stops cycling as house if warmed by sun.

What is the temperature in your house when it cycles every five minutes?   Where is your thermostat located?

I can run around naked in the house at 23.5.  :)

Thermostat is in hallway on main floor of our 1400 sq ft bungalow. The temperature never flucuates from 23.5 at all. It does not even allow the house to drop by even 1/2 a degree before coming on. It must react to a drop of 1/4 of a degree or something.

I was wondering if your heat pumps do the same.
