Natural gas line install info....
« on: April 21, 2008, 09:15:37 am »
Anyone here know NG line stuff?

I need to run a line for my BBQ.  Last time I had a guy come in, cost me $120 he did my dryer / stove and BBQ.

This time I call a guy for just the BBQ he wants $700  :o RIGHT!  I'll just buy another f'ing BBQ for $700 no way I'm paying that for a line.

So, I head to Home Depot, 50 feet of copper pipe $51, various fittings and such $30.  About $80 and I can do it myself.  Only problem is compression fittings for the gas lines.  They only sell water compression fittings at home depot -- can I use those????

I wouldn't do it.

You have to be licensed to do this work, and if anything ever happens your insurance may not cover it.  This isn't like electrical, which at the worst might be some smoke coming out of a metal box, this is life and death stuff.

I'd swallow my pride and look for somebody else.  You can give the guy the tubing as some of the payment.

Last time the gas guy said there is less pressure than water and if it is outside he advises most people to do it themselves haha.  I guess most people are scared of gas....  I fixed my stove and dryer myself which was professionally installed but was leaking.

As long as you check each connection for leaks as you go it's not really a big deal -- I haven't blown up from my dryer install -- they sell the kits at HD for a reason -- all the packaging is made for DIY.

No way I'm paying $700, seriously I will just buy a propane BBQ first or perhaps convert mine (probably not worth it).

Don't do it yourself.   Find a gas fitter in the Pages who will use the new stainless steel pipe ( covered in Yellow plastic) and the correct fittings including the quick release for a BBQ.
I think your home insurance would immediately go away if it is not done by a licenced installer.

However. If all the gas supply lines are OUTSIDE already and are good old iron pipe you COULD add the appropriate iron fittings to supply the BBQ yourself.

I have had both done in different houses.

Exactly, except the iron line is 35 feet from my final resting place so I want to run copper to it, because it will look like a$$ if iron is used.

My exterior gas lines are on the opposite side of the house as my deck and BBQ location. I was quoted $1200 minimum to route a line from the inside where my furnaces are through my basement ceiling (finished and closed in) and out to my deck. The cost could go up depending which way the joists are oriented. I declined, spent $35 to convert my BBQ to propane and have been tank swapping ever since.

Just remember to pay cash; no credit cards.  That way if on the very odd chance something did blow, and perhaps not even related to your actual install, no paper link exists.  Also, you might need to do the install at night.

ktm, I might just go that route.  $35 sounds better than $700.

This is why I have two tanks and make sure one is filled at all times.

Umm, why did you have to hook up from the inside?  For my basement gas fireplace, the supply line was hooked up directly from the outside meter and passed through the foundation wall.  I simply painted the yellow gas line to match my outside brick colour.

That would be an idea -- but then you need an inside shutoff valve do you not?

If you hook up from outside to outside, you don't have a shutoff on the inside -- unless an outside shutoff is good enough but probably not as it isn't very safe.

IMO, it doesn't matter if you have 2 tanks, the fact that you loose heat in the middle of cooking some NY strips ( and hopefully you are standing there when it goes out) and have to change tanks and get the heat back up will not give you good results on your steaks..

My outside to outside in TO had a shutoff at the BBQ connector only.  My inside to outside here has a shutoff also outside right be the BBQ connector. Both were done by licenced installers... the TO one was actually an Enbridge guy.

Outside to Outside would be a better solution for me, although it seems dangerous to me -- now you have an open pipe outside with no shutoff?  eek

My BBQ is on a second story deck over top of a walkout basement. I would need about 200' of supply line to wrap around my house. The exterior is a light colour stucco. I would have a snake of line all over the exterior of my house to get to the BBQ. Too much and would look like a$$.

If you still plan to do the install yourself:

Have a friend dial 9-1 from a safe distance, and at the ready to dial the second '1'.  ;D
