Windsor what is it like.
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:49:03 pm »
My job is offering me a posting in Windsor. So I'm wondering what is it like. What are good and bad areas. I see lot of houses for around 60 to 70,000. I have to go this weekend to have a look at a job site and scout out Winsor. Then I have to give them an answer by the end of the weekend.  :)

What is your reference point (i.e. where do you live now) to compare Windsor too?

Judging by the mls.ca listings for Windsor in the $60k-$70k range, none of those are houses I would live in, let alone rent.

Windsor has been hit hard by the automotive industry downturn and the working class neighbourhoods reflect that.  There are some affluent neighbourhoods with lots of character.  Proximity to Detroit is nice but gets old quick.

So, depending on where you are moving from, Windsor has it's plus and minuses.  I wouldn't leave the K-W, Toronto, Ottawa, London, Kingston areas to move to Windsor.  However, I'd pick Windsor over North Bay, Sudbury, Sault-STM, or any small town communities.

Good luck,

Windsor is a good place to live.  While it doesn't have all of the attractions of a large city like TO and others, it also doesn't have all of the traffic (the 401 ends here) or the crime (I think we had 4 murders last year). Housing is some of the best in the country. I live on Lake Erie, have a boat launch, beach rights, huge yard, 2.5 garage etc...Expect to pay around $150,000 for a place like this.  Outside of Windsor there are some really nice little towns.  Not far from Windsor (30 minutes) is Leamington, which was honored as the best place to live in Canada by Money Sense Magazine.  We have a large casino, and Detroit Sports is just minutes away if you're a fan.  After traveling around Canada and the US for a previous job, I rather like it here compared to large cities.

Tell me what you want to know and I'll help you out...Heck..I'll be your personal guide around Windsor this weekend if you'd like.  I do have a dyno to go to Saturday...you're welcome to tag along. :)

Send me a PM and I'll give you my home and cell numbers and we'll connect this weekend...

I have some friends from Windsor...they grew up there, and they nicknamed it "Windsh**"...this coming from 18/19 year old University students.  :D

But yes, I would assume homes are pretty cheap in the area due to the crumbling automotive industry, like JBrill mentioned earlier.

I hear the strip clubs in Windsor are top notch.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

wow.... the houses there are dirt cheap! Maybe for a reason.  ;)
London is prolly the best bet in that region. For a more charming town, look into Stratford. it's only 1hr away from London.

I used to live in Windsor until the 1980's.

I have also lived in Toronto, Ottawa, London and now Kitchener.

I always thought Windsor was a pretty good place to live.  It has two lakes very close by and has a wonderful river front park system.  It's easy to get around because of it's size and there are some pretty nice areas to live in.  I would suggest Riverside, Walkerville or South Windsor if you stay in the city or the far east suburbs eg. Lakeshore.  The air is cleaner in these areas.

One of it's biggest advantages is that it is a medium size city with all the advantages of a large city (Detroit) without the problems of a big city.  Detroit has excellent shopping, sports, entertainment and a fantastic airport with cheaper flights to places all over the world.

The biggest negative is that you are a long way from the rest of Canada and eventually you start to feel a little bit American because of the overpowering American media presence there.

London is a nicer city, but it is two hours away from everything.  Same for Kitchener, but it is one hour from Toronto.  If I had a choice I would go back because of the lakes and shopping, but both my kids live in Toronto and we want to stay close to them.

I went over to Stratford on the past Sunday to visit my Mother-in-law who is sick in the Hospital right now. I live in the centre of London and it only took 48 minutes from my home drivng at the speed lmit or slightly over to be in downtown Stratford. Its not very far at all as many folks communte everyday to work either there or here from there. Windsor is a nice City  with very beautiful parks as well. Like anywhere they have some really nice areas of course and some not so nice as well. They usually do not get as much snow as the rest of Canada it seems does. We have seen years where they cut there grass 11 months a year.  There's also 2 fine adult schools there as well which I am a graduate of one myself.  :)
